Micromax Enters Top 10 Global Smartphone Vendors List

The very renowned Indian brand Micromax is now on the tenth position among the largest phone brands in the world. According to the latest worldwide mobile sales report (Q1, 2015) of a technology research firm ‘Gartner Inc’s’, Micromax has a 1.8 % of the total global market share with 8,158,000 units sold.

Micromax has made it very easy and affordable for potential buyers to upgrade to Android smartphones from normal feature phone. The prices of entry level Android smartphones in the market has dropped from an average of Rs 10,000 to about Rs 7,000 with some really good entry-level 4G capable models selling for as low as Rs 5000.

Local brands and Chinese vendors have emerged as the key winners in this emerging markets during this quarter, said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. 73 % growth in the sales of smartphones has been recorded by these vendors and their combined shares have risen up to 47% during the first quarter of the year 2015.

Despite of the fall in sales, Samsung still holds its position at number 1 with a total of 24.2 % in the smartphone market and 21.4% in the overall handset market.

Samsung has been trying to keep up by moving on to an even quicker product release cycle, to keep its top position intact. On the other hand, Huawei has recorded a very high growth worldwide from 5.2 % in 3Q14 to 7.7 %. In the top 10 global mobile phone vendors’ list, Micromax is definitely a newcomer, while other Chinese brands like Xiaomi have carried on with their sales drive, again in the emerging mobile markets.

If we talk about operating systems, Android has continued to be the worldwide leader with a 1.4 percent gain in the market share over the last year and continues to remain at 84.7 percent as compared to Apple which looks like fighting an uphill battle at 13.1 percent. Microsoft, with the launch of Windows 10 for desktop (and soon on smartphones) has still not moved up; but dropped down from 3 percent to 1.7 in comparison to last year.

Micromax claimed in a release that it owed its gains and competitive gain to its “on-going investment in the best possible technological innovations, exact understanding of the consumer expectations & needs, innovating endlessly for devices & services, and a robust offline & online distribution network to provide a awesome and world class experience for its buyers”.

SAARC markets and new markets like Russia have also been target areas for Micromax over the past years.
