  • The beauty of the Dance of Democracy in India is that the election season in the country never gets a breather, as one or the other form of polls and their preparations will be underway. The political parties, whether national or regional, will be undertaking measures to ensure their electioneering picks up pace by ensuring the electorate is made aware of various issues bogging the nation. Of course, the Indian elections are based on caste equations, incentives, reservations, and quotas, which always form the crux of our electioneering and will play a decisive role in the eventual outcome. Moreover, who can discount the fact that regional parties in the country are not only more powerful but also play an important role in forming partnerships/alliances.

  • People closely following the fortunes of political parties over the decades would have observed how the polarization of society has taken deep-rooted places that cannot be ignored. The communal versus secular is another aspect of the Indian electoral system that invariably plays out big-time. Indeed, no Indian election is complete without the usual assurances, promises, reassurances, incentives, and now, the guarantees and freebies forming an extremely productive means for the political parties to impress upon the voters. Even though the Prime Minister himself has called out on several occasions about the countervailing effects of freebies, the ruling party has not desisted from dishing out guarantees of its own during recent elections.

  • As you must be aware, the state assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and the UT Pondicherry will be conducted this month. The electioneering is underway full throttle with all the major parties in campaign mode. The countrymen will be keenly observing how the election in West Bengal, especially, will pan out on the back of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to carry out special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The West Bengal government has been opposing the SIR tooth and nail right from the time the endeavourwas announced by the ECI. The matter eventually reached the Supreme Court, and the Apex Court issued directions to conduct the process, which has almost reached culmination.

BJP Manifesto: Promise Versus Reality

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance fancies its chances of assuming power in West Bengal for the first time. However, the country acknowledges the feisty incumbent Chief Minister is not going to let the saffron brigade run roughshod over electioneering without offering a tough fight. While West Bengal garners the attention, Tamil Nadu will be a straight fight between the two Dravida parties, AIADMK and DMK, respectively. The freebies on offer must be making the electorate salivate at the prospects. The BJP desperately wishes to hold on to Assam for the third consecutive time by winning handsomely. It’s a different story altogether in Kerala with the Left and the Congress-led alliances fighting it out. Let’s enjoy the unique Indian electoral process.
