Expecting Opposition Unity During the Parliamentary Elections is An Illusion!

  • The Indian political landscape will undergo a tremendous churning in the coming months is already showing visibility on the ground. Many strong regional parties will keep holding sway with the potential to have a bearing on the emerging national scene is also obvious. And that the Bharatiya Janata Party will make every effort at consolidating its sway over the electorate in the ensuing assembly elections to several big-ticket states as well as the Parliamentary elections in 2024 is a given fact too. It is admirable to watch how effectively the BJP’s electoral machinery continues to function without ever showing signs of fatigue or complacency. In stark contrast, the Grand Old Party lags in strategizing to stay relevant as it keeps losing grounds at an alarming rate.

  • Note that the Congress party is ceding grounds to several regional outfits that were hitherto aligned with it or branched out courtesy of enterprising leaders ambitious enough to carve out a niche. The top leadership led by the matriarch still clinging on to the Family name and hoping the scion to change the fortunes of the party will only help in further reducing the already diluted traction and heft. Amidst such a scenario, all the talks in circulation about the opposition parties forming a united front against BJP in 2024 fall flat as the GOP, one of the two pan-India parties, hardly evokes enthusiasm and appears increasingly unviable in public perception too. Make no mistake, Congress is in no position to assume the leadership role if it procrastinates to undertake long-delayed organizational restructuring despite repeated electoral setbacks.
  • Already the contours of unity going astray is visible with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) welcoming ex-Congress MP into the fold. After its spectacular win in the recently concluded assembly elections in West Bengal, the TMC is not hiding its ambitions to position itself as the primary driver of opposition unity to take on the might of the BJP. Note that the TMC was unwilling to join the Congress-led bloc’s protests in Parliament lately hurting the GOP clearly. Similarly, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its intent to go all out in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh in next year’s assembly polls. It is amply clear that the outfits led by netas with national ambitions are not content limiting themselves to one state but wish to expand further.

  • Despite the above, Congress can still hope for a dramatic turnover if only earnest attempts at revival are undertaken without any further delay or eternally waiting for the scion to take up cudgel yet again. The Congress is in a rut and also lacks political hunger to score wins cannot be denied either. It is also a fact that key states like Maharashtra, UP, Bengal, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu where present and prospective allies are expected to not cede space to Congress will make it extremely difficult to maneuver from a position of strength. Thus, all the permutations, combinations, personal ambitions, and considerations will appear to suit the BJP as a divided house amongst the opposition ranks is bound to benefit the saffron party big-time. Interesting times ahead for sure.
