This is probably the saddest news for all. A huge earthquake has struck off the coast of Sumatra with the huge 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale. This earthquake has indeed caused huge impact and destruction of the human being as well as to the property. Now, after being hit by such a high magnitude earthquake there is another risk of the Tsunami that could hit the land of Indonesia and Australia. If this happens, much more destruction can cause to the people of Indonesia and Australia.

Tsunami 1Last year also Tsunami incident occurred in Chile on September 16, 2015. It was a major earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Moment Magnitude scale that struck the west coast of Chile, causing a tsunami up to 16 feet (4.88 meters) high along the Chilean coast. The worst tsunami as well as one of the deadliest natural disasters recorded in history occurred in the year 2004 when an earthquake of magnitude 9.1-9.3 hit the Indian Ocean killing thousands of people from different lands.

Keeping such figures and incidents in mind, the people of Indonesia and Australia are worried. The earthquake has definitely caused deaths where the count is still not clear.

Indonesia and Australia are at the risk of Tsunami

Tsunami 2Heronimus Guru, Deputy head of operations with the National Search and Rescue Agency, says: “There are some who have died.”

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 502 miles southwest of Padang and the earthquake was actually 6 miles deep. According to the US Geological Survey, initially the quake struck was 8.1 magnitude, but it has been downgraded to 7.9 after that. After declaring the tsunami warning, people who are living in Padang have moved to higher grounds. In the past, scientists had already warned people as Padang is a Tsunami hotspot because of its geographical location.

Sumatra is a region that has already faced the 9.1-magnitude earthquake back in 2004. At that time, Tsunami had killed around 230,000 people. People also called Indonesia as “Pacific Ring of Fire” because of its location. Here, different plates of the earth’s crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.
