What is Netflix all about? It’s about curling up on the sofa on a cold winter night and watching a movie. On the other if you are looking to watch some music videos, mash-ups, or people/animals doing foolish things, then YouTube is the right place. This is how we see both these video networks from last five or six years. But now it seems that the time is changing as your YouTube wants to be Netflix.

It seems that the world has forgotten that YouTube was the first platform which drove the public towards an online TV subscription service. Since then other business are trying to copy this model in one way or another. Initially YouTube started as a video platform and then it soon became famous for its ‘billions of short clips as well allowing normal people to get renown from it. This video streaming platform has turned many normal people into celebrities. All that it needed was an internet connection, a computer, and talent. Now, Google is all geared up to expand its service into more than just a video platform.

YouTube has launched its big bet on whether its young viewers will prefer to pay a monthly subscription to see online stars. So watch out Netflix as YouTube is looking to boost its new premium service, YouTube Red. Which will be loaded with TV shows and movies.

YouTube’s Red is a paid subscription service, that offers ad-free usage plus a Spotify-like music service for US$9.99 per month. It was launched late last year. The big push for subscriptions begins in this week. I will have three made-for-YouTube movies and a new series starring Felix Kjellberg, YouTube’s most popular online star also popular as PewDiePie.

According to Peter Csathy chief executive of Manatt Digital Media, Regardless of YouTube’s significant hold on the audience, with over one billion monthly views, YouTube had no choice but respond to Netflix, Amazon and Hulu with original content. Presently YouTube is facing tough competition and many of us have a conception that YouTube is FREE. It is definitely going to be very challenging as many hard-core audiences might not want to pay subscription pricing.

Netflix and Hulu, with Amazon Prime possibly a distant third are YouTube Red’s main rivals. How do you think this stacks up? Is it even possible that YouTube would be able to kick Netflix off its throne anytime soon?

Take a look at the main features of YouTube Red:

1. No ads

The main advantage of YouTube Red is ad removal. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime do not have ads. Even Hulu has introduced an ad-free tier back in September of last year. None of us will want to waste our money to watch ads.

2. Google Music subscription for free

On subscribing to YouTube Red, you get a free subscription to Google Music. This subscription is worth $9.99 a month on its own, isn’t that good value for money.

3. Audio-only mode

Did you ever wish to listen to a song or a TED talk while using another app, or with the screen off? Then your wish is granted as YouTube Red will allow you to do so. This feature is one of its most attractive features, and is not available on Netflix.

4. Offline viewing

Another advantage over Netflix is that YouTube offers offline viewing. This feature doesn’t allow you to like or comment on videos while offline, but you can watch them anytime on your tablet or phone for up to 30 days.

5. Content

The heart of the matter is Content and this is what will ultimately determine YouTube Red’s success. YouTube has announced that it’ll be working on original content for its paid service. Till now what we know is that this content will be a mix of productions from its home grown stars. The content will be produced by more mainstream companies, including National Geographic Kids.

The major challenge YouTube Red will face is whether its young audience will agree to pay for content similar to what they have been habituated to receiving for free. Additionally, many users use ad blockers, which means they already had the benefit of watching the content without ads.

The response for YouTube Red’s promotional video ‘Meet YouTube Red’, has given an indication that there is some primary fight to the paid subscription model. Presently the video has received 37 thousand ‘thumbs down’ ratings and only 13 thousand ‘thumbs up’. But over time it may be hard for the users to ignore YouTube Red’s unique combination of both ad-free music and video rolled into an inexpensive price.
