Why Would a Political Leader Question the Government’s Functioning While Touring Overseas?

  • Inarguably, politics and political leaders have a special place in any country’s developmental agenda since the reins of guiding the nation rests with the administrators. Not for nothing, political leaders and in turn the political parties elected to govern any nation are termed the policymakers, who not only envisage a far-reaching and impactful agenda for the progression but also provide ways and means to ensure the same is executed on the ground. For a democratic form of governance to succeed, it is essential to not only have a great team of leaders in the treasury benches to take forward the nation’s growth agenda but also must have a strong opposition too to keep the ruling dispensation on the toes. It works wonders this way.

  • Since no compromise should be entertained/allowed when it comes to a question of a nation’s sovereignty, security, safety, and progression, the opposition ranks are expected to essay a critical roleplay without appearing to be too regressive in their approach to the subject. Opposing for the sake of opposition simply defeats the purpose. Easier said than done though as the political parties are always on the lookout to go one up on the other by latching onto an issue that potentially could turn out to be a winner to impress upon the electorate. Mind you, parochial considerations always rule the political class, and as such, none of the political leaders would want to look another side when an opportunity presents itself to score a brownie point.
  • As you are aware, the Indian political scenario is no different, and with communal against secular narration playing out loudly courtesy of the labyrinthine caste equations dotting our huge landscape, the battle lines are drawn between the opposing parties. Different ideologies define our political landscape, identified largely with the national as well as regional parties. However, none of the political parties are expected to denigrate the Indian democratic credentials that have stood the test of time earning fulsome accolades from the global community. Unity in diversity defines the Indian country and existence even as the seamless integration of all regions ensures praiseworthy furthering of the common goal on every front over the years.

  • Unfortunately, an increasing but despicable phenomenon is at play when the country’s democratic credentials get questioned not by any other country but by a leader representing the oldest party while traveling overseas. Raising imaginative and uncalled-for concerns about the very functioning of democratic institutions by painting an apocalyptic scenario simply unravels negativity much to the merriment of detractors. Playing to the gallery for domestic consumption is different from blissfully indulging in denigrating the country’s credentials on some foreign shores. Hopefully, better sense prevails upon the leader to stop harming the country’s reputation overseas without solid statistics to back questionable claims.
