  • Not so long ago, the state of Uttar Pradesh was notorious for not only the prevailing law and order situation but also obvious unholy nexus between the police-politicians-bureaucracy-gang lords and the ilk. Successive state governments were most adept at paying lip services at addressing the glaring anomaly rather than acting concretely on the ground. No wonder, the people of the state were constantly in fear of being subjugated by the dubious/anti-social elements. Despite saner voices raising concerns about the despicable situation prevailing, the authorities looked the other way. However, when the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP assumed power, things changed dramatically leading to a much-improved law and order situation on the ground. Or is it? Let’s look into it.

PC: Satyam Baghel

  • Yogi Adityanath sits comfortably under the moniker of Bulldozer Babu for raging the illegally constructed buildings. Of course, several hundred rowdy sheeters and wanted criminals have surrendered for fear of police retribution, even though it may be construed as extrajudicial. Nonetheless, the recent killings of Atiq and Ashraf Ahmed raise serious questions about the UP police’s claims. The prestige of the UP police has been destroyed by the murders that took place in front of the media, surrounded by a posse of police officers, and although both brothers who are currently in prison were charged in more than 100 cases. It is difficult to understand how such a heinous murder could have taken place in the face of such tight security, and the UP administration must respond to many inquiries regarding the apparent weakness.
  • Forget the celebratory social media frenzy. The killings are a colossal failure, and UP police’s top brass ought to be held accountable. As was already established, Atiq’s lengthy political career, in which he transitioned through various political parties, sheds light on the relationship between politicians and criminals in the state. This suggests that his murder might have been carried out pretty quickly. When two police policemen and Umesh Pal were killed in February, other murders linked to it happened. This makes the police’s negligence in Prayagraj last week reprehensible. A reliable examination of this sloppiness is necessary for the good of the state. Remember, investigations cannot be limited to the slaying from last week. There should be added more.

PC: Santosh Kumar Sharma

  • Remember, on April 13, In a confrontation, UP police killed Asad, Ahmed’s son, and another person. The murder of Umesh Pal was connected to this incident as well. The SC has recently expressed concern about extrajudicial encounters. According to SC’s standards, a different inquiry into this encounter needs to be done. Moreover, When it comes to police and extrajudicial encounters, India has a sordid past that is indicative of a broken criminal justice system that mirrors an unholy nexus underneath. While effective law and order enforcement is valued, it’s also critical to eliminate any perceptions of authority abuse and arbitrary decision-making. Only in a conducive environment would investors swarm. This issue needs to be immediately addressed by the UP administration.
