  • The majority of the citizens, cutting across geographic boundaries, would agree without reservations that the aspirational society not only requires democracy to be accommodative but also driven by robust technology aided by a growth-oriented economy. Mind you, modern-day governments are immensely ambitious to push ahead with the agenda intended to impress upon the people through various measures in line with the changing times. None of the governments would like to be left behind the growth parameters when fast-evolving technology is readily available. And the democratic form of governance offers tremendous opportunities for entrepreneurs to freely express and embrace the advent of technology.

  • We know how each arm of democracy viz. the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary must be in sync to uphold the tone, tenor, and tenet of the Constitution. Intentionally or unintentionally, circumventing efforts and oneupmanship often tend to result in encroachments of other territories leading to disharmony. Mind you, the vitiated atmosphere is not conducive to harmonious existence by any stretch of the imagination. The need of the hour is to nicely balance the necessities of the modern world without disturbing the inevitability of emphasizing overall growth and development. Easier said than done though as the undercurrents of dissent, discords, and diverse viewpoints are bound to crop up most often than not.
  • In a country like India, the challenges forthcoming for administrators in a vibrant democracy are extremely diverse with caste, creed, class, religion, language, culture, tradition, and some such considerations coming in the way. Coherently holding together such varied dynamics is not an easy task and this is where our political parties should place their parochial considerations aside and strive to drive the country on the path of development. Ideally speaking this very thought should be the guiding force, but we do not stay in an ideal world anymore. The past experience suggests how the political leaders leave no stone unturned in consolidating their vote banks through labyrinthine caste equations even if it goes against the long-term interests of the nation.

  • This is where the judiciary, the custodian of the Constitution, has to be strong to rein in whenever the situation demands. Trying to undermine the independence, authority, and functionality of the judiciary will be counterproductive for the country. The stability of institutions and the independence of the judiciary are crucial to modern economies. Not only that, they are fundamental to a vibrant democracy that attracts foreign investments and nurtures talent as well. You see, there are so many interconnections defining how a modern democratic country should function. Therefore, populist political actors, no matter which part of the world they belong to, would do well to remember that the country’s interests should precede personal interests.
