  • In a democratic mode of governance, the treasury and the opposition political parties play an extremely crucial role in ensuring the country’s progress doesn’t get hampered by parochial considerations. Indeed, the political parties irrespective of affiliations are known to consider furthering their interests at the altar of foregoing the bigger national issues. Any number of instances from the past demonstrate this tendency to have taken a deep root in our political machinations. As is its wont, none of the political leaders or the parties that they represent would wish to leave any stone unturned to ensure the assiduously built vote banks do not get diluted if any opportunity presents itself to further their cause.

  • As you are aware, the Manipur violence for the past three months has not only caught the imagination of the concerned countrymen but also has invited unsolicited news headlines across the globe. Every effort undertaken by the state and central law enforcement agencies has yielded little results vis-à-vis curbing the spiraling violence. No wonder, sensing an opportunity to pin down the ruling dispensation at the Centre, the opposition led by the Grand Old Party went hammer and tongs denigrating the former and pressing for a no-confidence motion. The INDIA block was demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi respond to the Manipur violence and the no-confidence motion was moved to ensure the same.
  • Of course, the recently concluded monsoon session of the Parliament was marred by utter chaos and disruptions courtesy of the opposition raising the Manipur issue with force. Indeed, the numbers were comfortably in favor of the ruling National Democratic Alliance by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha. In Rajya Sabha too, the NDA block was less concerned to sail through the motion without a hitch. The opposition INDIA block new this. But still, it went ahead with a single-point agenda to force the Prime Minister to speak on the matter. The moot point to ponder over here is what was achieved by the opposition block by moving the no-confidence motion against the ruling dispensation at the center. Nothing much one must say.

  • Simply put, the floor of the Parliament provided an opportunity for the political parties to sound a poll bugle for the ensuing general elections in 2024. Every political party for and against the BJP raised issues of the past to buttress their claims for the mother of elections. It was visible all through the debate. Mind you, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had repeatedly mentioned speaking elaborately on the Manipur issue. And he did. But the opposition struck to its demand by insisting on the PM to speak. PM did speak and how? We all know how good an orator PM Modi is. His marathon replies to the debate simply provided grounds for him to launch a blistering attack on Congress. Did the no-confidence motion achieve anything tangible? None.
