- People closely following the fortunes of the Indian democratic form of governance, especially the increasingly apparent animosity and/or lack of trust between the incumbent government at the Centre and the opposition parties, must be wondering what’s happening with the way things are panning out. As it is, the geopolitical and geostrategic situation around the world is under tremendous pressure courtesy of the president of the United States of America’s illogical fondness for imposing import tariffs on products entering that country. The subsequent mayhem caused by these moves has completely altered the established world order by creating such a chaotic situation, sparing none. And India is also undergoing turbulent times, consequently.

- Make no mistake, the need of the hour is to stay focused and navigate through the choppy waters to ensure the country sails through without much turbulence. The central government has been making earnest efforts to arrive at free trade agreements with the major countries around the world, including the USA. Thankfully, a couple of trade agreement announcements with the European Council and now, with the USA, have come at the right time to ease the growing unease within the country for the traders/businessmen and the economy. The FTA with the EU has come after a long wait of 18 years, dubbed the Mother of All Deeds. Coming close on the heels is the trade agreement with the USA after hard-fought negotiations of months. A much-needed one.

- As we are aware, the USA trade pact was announced when the Budget session of the Parliament was underway. At the best of times, the opposition has been at loggerheads with the treasury benches right through the last few years. The disruptions, accusations, allegations, and general pandemonium are the order of the day. It started all over again during the motion of thanks to the President’s address to both parliaments. The leader of the opposition, quoting from an unpublished memoir of a retired Army general, was repeatedly disallowed by the Lok Sabha speaker, asking him not to break the established rules of the functioning of the House. As is his wont, the LOP failed to heed, and the ruckus turned into a complete pandemonium.

- The moot point to ponder over here is what on earth the opposition is aiming at in their quest to corner the government with allegations crossing the limits of decency. The LOP is in the habit of targeting the Prime Minister with acerbic and often below-the-belt comments that cross the limits of decency. His personal grudge against the PM doesn’t bode well for him or the nation. It’s time the perennially young leader respects the position he holds and exhibits maturity in discharging entrusted responsibilities. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly obvious how his personal animosity towards the PM is clouding the LOP’s judgement. His single-minded hatred towards the PM is restricting the LOP from espousing a wiser disposition. Will he change his attitude?
