- The very mention of the word surgery immediately conjures up the image of a hospital, operating theater, doctors, nurses, attendants, a peculiar odor permeating every corridor, a sanitized environment, and, of course, patients with different ailments seeking medical relief. Make no mistake, none of us would routinely wish to even visit a hospital just like that. We are forced to visit a hospital either for self-care or to extend support and accompany someone seeking medical attention for whatever ailment is bothering them. Willfully and/or voluntarily, none of us wish to visit the place simply because of the underlying assumption that one may be diagnosed with a terminal illness and would take a humongous amount of time to overcome a serious disease.

- The very thoughts of uncertainty lingering at the back of our minds while visiting any healthcare professional are always a bag of mixed emotions. The upheaval experienced vis-à-vis health at the very beginning may not cause concerns. However, if the health challenges persist for a certain period, are we left with any option other than to visit a medical facility/professional for a remedy? This is where the uncanny but familiar sense of foreboding seeps into our psyche, not knowing what is in store for us. The visit to a medical facility always follows a routine. Initial assessment, diagnosis, explanation, possible treatment schedule, medication, and subsequent visit for a follow-up. For any minor condition, timely treatment would suffice.

- What if the ailment is serious enough to demand more than routine treatment? The human body is so complex in its entirety that despite the field of medicine advancing spectacularly over the years, we are still left with grappling on a certain ailments/diseases/sickness that even an extremely well-qualified medical professional may not be able to address. Just imagining what makes our body the way it functions would render us wonderstruck, for the complexities are beyond the understanding of mere mortals like us. The human body is considered one of the most complex systems in the universe, structured hierarchically across multiple scales. It consists of an estimated 37.2 trillion cells, operates 11 interdependent organ systems, and contains trillions of microbial cells, all working together to maintain life. It’s fascinating and scary as well.

- Ever wondered what it is like to undergo surgery as prescribed by an experienced surgeon? Of course, innumerable surgeries on various parts/organs of the body are performed as a matter of routine, as well as extremely complex, life-threatening ones. The fear of uncertainty, not knowing whether the surgery scheduled would be successful or not, would be par for the course thinking pervading all concerned. Not only the affected individual but the immediate family too would be terrified of the prospects of a surgery, even a safe and minor one, you see. Such is the imagery of hospitals and doctors pervading in our psyche. Given a choice, we fervently wish/pray to stay as far away as possible from visiting any health facility. The complexities surrounding healthcare itself are too difficult to comprehend. It’s best to stay as far away as possible.
