  • Ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nudged the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, to release Bangladeshi cricketer from the team, the dramatic turnarounds have happened, leading up to the ensuing T20 World Cup. Bangladesh sought the change of venues for the team from India to Sri Lanka, which the ICC flatly denied. Bangladesh has pulled out of the World Cup and has been duly replaced by Scotland. When we thought everything was behind us, Pakistan made unnecessary moves by first stating it may not participate in the World Cup. Now, the Pakistani government has stated that the team will indeed participate in the World Cup but will not play against Team India on 15 February 2026, scheduled in Sri Lanka.

  • Needless to mention, this is plain politics being played rather than allowing the sporting activity to function seamlessly. Pakistan thinks it is showing solidarity with Bangladesh by initiating these moves. Nobody understands what the two cricket boards are going to achieve with this ill-advised and illogical move. As cricket connoisseurs, experts, and crazy fans know, when India and Pakistan play cricket in a World Cup, it’s usually the biggest match, and the schedule is made accordingly. Of course, fans simply love it, TV channels make tonnes of money, and everyone talks about it. The excitement and anticipation leading up to the much-hyped match are palpable. Little wonder, tournament schedules are often made so that the two teams meet.

  • By deciding not to play India on February 15, Pakistan has poured cold water on all the stakeholders. This decision of Pakistan could make the tournament less exciting and cause financial losses for sure. This is where one must deduce that the real reason for such an unwelcome choice is politics, and simply not cricket.  The moot point to ponder over here is why Pakistan has jumped into the issue, even though it wasn’t directly involved. Importantly, it’s not the cricket board that decided to pull out against India; it’s the Pakistan government that made the decision. This shows it’s more about showing political support for Bangladesh than about the game itself. In South Asia, cricket and politics often get mixed up. This is one such case you see.

  • Mind you, Pakistan doesn’t have as much success or money as India, so using cricket as a political message is not surprising. Pakistan and Bangladesh have also been getting closer in military matters, and cricket becomes an easy way to show unity against a bigger and richer neighbourlike India. The ICC could punish Pakistan with fines or even a ban. But that might help Pakistan gain sympathy by saying it’s being treated unfairly. So, what should India do? Instead of getting pulled into the drama, the BCCI should focus on running a smooth tournament and winning the World Cup. Team India is in a strong position, and lifting the trophy should be the real goal. Did someone say India and Pakistan matches have become one-sided in favour of the former? Indeed.
