  • As the popular saying goes – democracy is nothing but chaos of varied nature duly allowed by the power of the Constitution to voice any and every opinion freely – sums up the form of governance desired by every citizen in the world. Of course, democracy is a system of government where political power is vested in the people. Citizens exercise this power either directly by voting on legislation or indirectly by electing representatives to make decisions on their behalf. In other words, a democratic form of government is for the people, by the people, and of the people. A robust democracy balances majority rule with the protection of minority rights. It relies on several foundational pillars, including free and fair elections, rule of law, and civil liberties.

  • As mentioned above, a democratic form of governance cannot be rigidly enforced but diligently embraces dissenting voices, diverse opinions, and conflicting viewpoints from those of the administration. That’s the beauty of democracy, unlike authoritarian, autocratic, totalitarian, monarchical, oligarchical, and aristocratic forms of government. Indian democracy is not only duly acknowledged for its vibrancy and dynamism, but also for its rootedness in the ground realities, laying emphasis on the socio-economic development of people. Ever since gaining independence, successive governments at both the Centre and the States have ensured the Constitutionally mandated rights are upheld. People-centric socio-welfare measures amply prove the same.

  • This being the case, people are also expected to raise their voices demanding what they believe is unjust and requiring redressal from the authorities concerned. The whole nation is witness to what transpired with the NEET-NTA fiasco robbing lakhs of students of a just opportunity to get into medical institutions to pursue professional courses. The lackadaisical attitude exhibited by the NTA authorities, spectacularly failing to conduct entrance examinations fairly to medical institutions, has not only shamed the whole country but also completely nullified the aspiring students/families of tremendous efforts to best the professional courses. The repeated paper leaks have been embarrassing to say the least.

  • As is the case with the political landscape, the opposition parties are quickly off the block to corner the Union Government for the repeated failure to conduct medical entrance examinations without any hitch. However, what has grabbed the attention of the whole nation is a relatively new political entity gaining prominence by conducting a sit-in dharna demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister and offering compensation to the students who committed suicide because of the paper leaks. The agitation has gained considerable attention, support, and voice from various quarters. The rallies are attracting a sizeable crowd, drawing even people who are not directly affected by the outcome. That’s the beauty of Indian democracy. Let it flourish.
