- The oft-repeated maxim – the change is the only constant, never fails to exercise its undisputed claim, generation after generation, since time immemorial. Humankind has been blessed with such revolutionary initiatives, innovations, inventions, growth, and development over the millennia that we have immensely benefited from the perpetually occurring happenstances. While humanity has progressed exponentially vis-à-vis innovatively driven endeavours, what about socio-cultural evolution in terms of overcoming anachronistic practices, blind faith/belief systemswidely prevalent, male chauvinism, a largely misogynistic society, and a cry for gender parity still receiving biased treatment and attention? Not much has changed in these social parameters.

- The moot point to ponder over here is that humankind has welcomed unbelievably humongous technological developments by riding piggyback on growth yardsticks adopted from time to time to keep the increasingly aspirational society perpetually interested. Certain age-old practices and deep-rooted belief systems haven’t altered much despite the overall growth witnessed. Mind you, the fundamental social fabric based on primacy accorded to family remains intact. However, several changes in the mindset and acceptance of new practices have emerged sporadically around the globe. Some of the most established family moors and orientations have also witnessed convergence, loosening the hitherto firmly held anachronistic systems steadily.

- While the strong familial bond continues to be encouraged, offering significant comfort to society’s deep-rooted bonding, some changes in line with the fast-changing times are opening up ways for adaptation. How about three legal parents for a change? A welcome thought, one would say. How so? Across societies, two parents are an accepted norm. As if two parents weren’t enough, eyeroll, a 4-year-old in Europe has three legally recognized parents now. Upside: those teentantrums, coming in the future, can be shared in three ways. Jokes aside, it’s the story of a child who lives in Germany, with two men, who are married, one of whom is the biological parent, who fathered him with a woman, the couple’s friend.

- The Italo-German, non-biological father’s request that Italy, too, legalise the adoption of the child, was rejected. Local authorities suspected surrogacy, illegal in Italy. But an Italian court said rubbish and allowed the adoption. The child now has three legal parents. Two dads and a mom. It’s delightful and reassuring to see courts uphold the idea that parenthood can be a fluid concept, with expansive interpretation. Tradition sees parents as a hetero couple, an idea hardwired into societies, across religions, globally. Yet, society is nudged to be accommodating and accepting of the individuals’ choices and circumstances. In this case, law, often slow and creaky, was refreshingly surprising, catching up with lived reality. Changing times call for dynamic thinking.
