Ever since civilization has evolved over millennia, of late, tremendous emphasis has been placed on cleanliness, hygiene, and welcoming surroundings. As humanity progressed on the back of evolutionary processes, we started to realise how important it is for us to emphasize maintaining welcoming cleanliness and hygienic surroundings to keep diseases, illness, and sickness at bay. An earnest attempt at studying human evolution over millennia would reveal how fascinatingly our ancestors kept pace with the unraveling witnessed through simple acceptance. Interestingly, some civilizations have placed tremendous importance on general cleanliness more than others. Why?

  • Let’s explore how human emphasis on clean surroundings and welcoming atmosphere too has evolved as one of the most basic but essential parameters for healthy living. The modernity-defined developments, initiatives, innovations, and growth have reached stratospheric levels over the millennia is stating the obvious and hence needs no further elaboration. As Indians, how do we, as one of the most ancient civilizations, treat cleanliness and hygienic surroundings in the present-day world as compared to others? Without sounding critical, cynical, and overtly condescending, it would suffice to mention that we are always catching up on the cleanliness/hygiene front as compared to others.   • Make no mistake, our Indian psyche on this aspect is quite different from the majority view. How so? We are most adept at ensuring how we keep our immediate living quarters/space in a welcoming manner. We spare no efforts whatsoever to go the extra mile in ensuring our living space is spic and span but scarcely pay any palpable attention to the outside of our inner living quarters. Society is a microcosm of what the smallest unit of family exists at the very nascent level. We, the citizens, make society in its present form by contributing in every parameter of economic activities with unbridled enthusiasm and enterprise. However, what has been noticed right from us to the civic agencies is our scant disregard for general cleanliness and hygienic surroundings.

  • It is fascinating to note, for instance, how Japan considers cultivating clean living standards right from the time of birth of their children. The overt emphasis on this inalienable factor starts right from infancy, with society actively contributing to developing individuals fully immersed in maintaining high levels of standards vis-à-vis a clean environment and surroundings. So much so that even during any sporting competitions involving Japan witnesses how supporters go about collecting the garbage, spillovers, waste, and other stuff before leaving the stadium. Such an inherent endeavour is not only commendable but worthy of being followed by others as well. Why can’t we follow in a small measure by ensuring we don’t indulge in spillovers outside? We must.
