State-run BSNL announces an alternative to the 4G. It will be now setting up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. This set up will entail an investment of about Rs 6,000 crore.
Reason for this launch –
1. Counter their Inadequacy
On Monday the Public sector telecom major BSNL said that it is working on setting up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots, the main reason behind this launch was to counter its inadequacy in providing 4G data services.
2. Absence of Relevant Spectrum
Currently BSNL is neither a 4G service provider, nor it has any relevant spectrum to launch this service.
3. A Step to deal with the challenge
Wi-Fi Hotspots are faster as compared to the 4G, so this step helps them to deal with the challenge by providing a cheaper and faster alternative to the 4G.
How will these hotspots work?
1. Free Wi-Fi services will be provided to users for 30 minutes per 24 hrs (3 times in a month) .
2. Users can use it in multiple sessions.
3. Post exhausting the free usage limit of 30 minutes, user can continue using the service by paying for it.
4. Subscription plans are available in multiple denominations, like Rs 20, Rs 30, Rs 50 and Rs 70 which will be valid for 30 min, 60 min, 120 min or one day, respectively.
Plan and Investment
1. 500 Wi-Fi Hotspots have already been set up in the country.
2. Plans to increase these hotspots to 2,500 in the current financial year.
3. They aim to improve the telecom services too, by setting up around 25,000 mobile towers across the country.
4. Total estimated investment would be Rs 5,500 crore.
5. Call drops issue has been taken care by removing many towers from residential areas. This has been done to clear the misconception of the people who think that the radiation from the mobile towers affect heath adversely.
BSNL Aims
In the FY15, BSNL has achieved an operating profit of Rs 672 crore, they expect to reach Rs 1000 crore by the end of the current fiscal year.
BSNL is also working to take the company to a net profit position by FY19.
