  • Any civilized society across the world would always lay tremendous emphasis on gentle, welcoming, accommodative, respectful, and reverential conduct during any interactions. A mature and healthy interaction is imperative. Since time immemorial, we have been exhorted not only to conduct ourselves in a dignified manner but also to show a respectful demeanor towards others when striking up a conversation. Yes, a situation may not be ideal all the time, and there may be a trigger or two that incite people to indulge in conversation, lose temper, and/or become defensive/aggressive while articulating diverse viewpoints. Make no mistake, such incidents are bound to happen innumerable times in our lives, and as such, we must be making efforts subconsciously to overcome those urgings to be aggressive.

  • Easier said than done, but not impossible to make a conscious effort to rein in intemperate, disdainful, condescending, and uncontrollable urgings to show our aggressive side. Mind you, our characteristic traits are not only inborn and inbred but also cultivated while observing, interacting, cultivating, and consciously making efforts to show what we really are inherently. As within so without, goes the popular saying highlighting the fact that what is our inner constitution would eventually manifest outward. Undoubtedly, the onus is on us to make every effort to imbibe a pleasant and welcoming disposition, which only makes us feel confident and comfortable during any interactions during the course of our professional as well as domestic exchanges.

  • Unfortunately, what has been witnessed over the last few years from the political class of the country, irrespective of party affiliation/ideology/philosophy, is anything but cordial and welcoming since the language being used is often offensive, abusive, vituperative, and downright despicable. People having grown up witnessing some of the most robust, oratorically stimulating, and most productive debates/discussions among the political class in the two Houses of Parliament have sadly been made to witness rampant destructions/obstructions with foul language bandied about with such nonchalance. Forget about a healthy exchange of viewpoints; the language is full of uncharacteristically offensive connotations targeting individuals.

  • So much so that the deteriorating language standards by the political class can be gauged by the fact that attacks are increasingly becoming personal. With the advent of social media platforms taking precedence in our daily lives, the microblogging sites are extensively used to communicate with the impressionable audience using below-the-belt language, with decency and civic standards thrown to the winds. It goes without saying that people in responsible positions are being watched and followed extensively. Hence, the language in use must be no less than civilized, respectful, and acceptable even if one tends to disagree with the other side. The elders representing society should set high standards without compromising on the decency expected from them.
