  • The very mention of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao instantly connects to memories of ushering in reforms leading to liberalization and globalization in the early 1990s when the country was staring at a potentially embarrassing balance of payments crises. What ensued following the introduction of reforms back then would go on to define our country’s economic roadmap setting in motion the trajectory of growth/transformation/development that has stood us in good stead so far.

  • In every true sense, Rao should be accorded the long-delayed credit for essaying the role of a catalyst that opened the country to go beyond the conservative approach to embrace reformist measures. He is the true architect of modern Indian growth story but hardly merits reference forget about fulsome accolades that he so richly deserves. Not for nothing, Rao is referred to as the father of Indian economic reforms.  Rao was the first Southern Indian and second non-Hindi speaking PM to hold the Highest Office.
  • An extremely erudite person, Rao was able to converse in 17 languages with ease and possessed an eclectic interest in literature, cultural and historical pedigree of our great nation apart from mastering smart political maneuvers. Though heading a minority government in 1991, it speaks volumes about his astute political moves that ensured him completing full term amidst a plethora of challenges. Survivor to the core, no less.

  • Under his command, reforms introduced opened the door for foreign investment, allowed reforming capital markets, deregulated domestic businesses, and paved the way for reforming the trade regime, respectively. With back to the wall, Rao’s government concentrated on reducing the fiscal deficit, allowed privatization of the public sector, and increasing investment in infrastructure to set in motion historical modifications.
  • Though Rao was a visionary leader whose style of functioning was unusually characterized as indecisively decisive but in hindsight, the reformist stance he so passionately pursued changed the course of the nation’s destiny forever. He enjoyed excellent equations with all political leaders cutting across party affiliations.  During his Prime Ministership, it is to be noted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) started emerging as a political party to reckon with taking on the might of the Indian National Congress (INC).

  • Rao was also instrumental in picking up and positioning a brilliant non-political economist Manmohan Singh as the Finance Minister who went onto hold the Highest Office of the Prime Minister. Manmohan Singh essayed a defining role in implementing the above reforms adroitly with the full backing of Rao. As the nation enters the centenary year of Rao’s birth, it is apt to remember, recognize, and regard the gentleman former Prime Minister for his history-altering moves by rightfully celebrating unheralded achievements at least now. Rao deserves greater acknowledgment.
