Mind you, when cutting-edge IT-driven applications/solutions/software were being programmed, the Indian IT manpower/tech pool were at the forefront, pioneering epochal innovations that would alter the world like never before. No wonder the Indian IT-trained professionals were not only much sought after, making a beeline to some of the most advanced nations in the world, but also were remunerated handsomely, thereby establishing a welcome trend that would prove to be beneficial all around.

- Yes, the coinage of brain drain appeared apt since the trained IT professionals had other greener pastures to explore, since the most advanced nations were laying out a red carpet with great enticements to boot. Why did the successive Indian governments, both at the Centre and the States, not wholly utilize the available manpower to benefit the country big time? That’s a million-dollar question, you see. We know how crucial software is. From phones to cars, software is the key product differentiator now. India should focus on taking the lead in this pace. Better late than never. Mind you, software is eating the world, literally. We have an app for everything now. In fact, let’s mention multiple apps. Indeed, software has been eating software, so to speak.

This marks the end of a race that started in 2010 when Google’sAndroid OS and Apple acquired voice command capabilities almost simultaneously. Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana were also hot contenders at one point. But a Gemini-powered Siri in 2026 proves that software matters more than hardware. Thanks to the Apple deal, Google’s parent Alphabet has cracked the $4tn valuation club, populated by just one other entity currently, Nvidia. Of course, markets are fickle. Microsoft and Apple were there, slipped out, and maybe back anytime. And there’s no doubt the world is much more livable thanks to software.

Factories are safer, and product quality is better, again thanks to software. Even war is now software’s playfield. Software is the key differentiator, the game changer. With its vast pool of tech talent, India can also be a software powerhouse. We need brands of our own. Our own world-beating products powered by our own software. The authorities must provide thrust to explore this yet untapped domain with intent and vigour.
