The FBI two weeks ago called Apple’s headquarters, with a jarring message stating that the agency wants Apple to help them in hacking an iPhone. Apple then refused. And, with this started the encryption battle in between the FBI and the California based tech giant. Even the case went further to next level in court.
Encryption battle of FBI with Apple!
On 16th February, the court ordered that Apple should enable investigators to use the ‘brute force’ in order to gain access to information, which was stored on the iPhone. It was the same iPhone that was used by San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook.
What is brute force?
Brute force is basically a standard hacking technique, which investigators need so as to enter as many passcodes as it takes to guess anybody’s passcode by breaking the standard security feature of auto-erasing after 10 attempts that Apple offers. In this case, Farook’s passcode!
Court order!
The court order requires the tech giant to help the FBI create and install software on the iPhone. The software would bypass this standard security feature and other security features. And, then the investigators can theoretically crack the 4-digit passcode with almost 10,000 attempts between 0000 and 9999.
Apple’s reaction!
Apple is resistant to this order of court and it refused to follow! And, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday said in an open letter to its customers that Apple will gonna fight the order. He also warned that the compliance with the FBI’s demands would gonna open up a Pandora’s Box.
He wrote, ‘In the wrong hands, this software, which does not exist today, would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone’s physical possession. And, building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control!’
Support of Apple’s stance!
Many privacy advocates along with the technology leaders around the globe largely came out in support of Apple’s stance. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO also commented on this issue via his Twitter Account.
He said, ‘Important post by @tim_cook. Forcing companies to enable hacking could compromise users’ privacy. We build secure products to keep your information safe and we give law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders.’
‘But that’s wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices & data. Could be a troubling precedent. Looking forward to a thoughtful and open discussion on this important issue’, he further added.
