  • Since time immemorial, humankind has been consistent in abusing Mother Nature to the extent possible by showing irresponsibility/carelessness towards natural resources available, waking up to the horrendous happenings late in the day, and subsequently initiating desperate measures to address the imminent disaster from striking us. The knee-jerk reactions have been too familiar for millennia, even as the firefighting mode adopted by humankind hardly addresses the issue satisfactorily. What’s the use of bolting the door when the horse has already bolted away? One of the starkest challenges encountered by humankind is environmental degradation, courtesy of unchecked exploitation, leading to disastrous weather vagaries compounding our miseries.

  • The atmosphere is witnessing unprecedented heat owing to carbon emissions, which in turn is making way for erratic weather patterns, causing unmitigated consequences around the world. The global community had to turn to environmentally friendly measures to facilitate growing clamour for modern amenities. This quest of humanity is unquenchable, you see. Thankfully, the focus shifted to clean/alternative energy, like electric vehicles. And what about requisite infrastructure to support the EV revolution? The time is ripe for automakers to step up and lead the setting up of EV-charging and other concomitant infrastructure to support the much-needed move, especially in India. Yes, it’s anyone’s guess how long the US-Israel-Iran war will continue.

  • It leaves no doubt whatsoever that there’s no better time to step on the gas, read electric, to push for a swift and seamless transition to electrification of transport. EV’s contribution to ensuring energy security cannot be overstated. Great idea, right? Unfortunately, as a Tesla motorist discovered on a trip from Delhi to Jaipur and back, the road to a stress-free EV cruise is very bumpy. As the motorist discovered, what the app showed differed from ground reality as charging stations were few and far between. And, charging points were out-of-order as well. With that as an on-road experience, it’s no wonder EV penetration was barely less than 8%, fiscal 2025. That’s not encouraging for GOI’s goal of 30% annual vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, just four years away.

  • One think tank pegged the actual numbers to keep 50mn EVs moving, India would need 1.3mn charging stations by 2030. Per a Niti report, over Rs 40k cr were spent by way of incentives, over the last 10 years, to reach 7.6% penetration. And it’s obvious the problem with selling EVs, still, is the hassle of running EVs. Niti argues that gentle mandates and disincentives will push the EV transition. Globally, laying out the EV charging infra has been led by consortia of auto companies. It happened in the US, Europe, South Korea, and Japan. India has around 20 charging point operators, but they can neither build the infra nor maintain it at the scale required for a meaningful transition. The operators should partner with govts to build the charging infra. Simple.
