  • Indian citizens from all over the country, regardless of caste, creed, class, religion, ethnicity, linguistics, traditions, culture, or beliefs and practices, have one thing in common. Can anyone figure out what it is? It’s nothing more than a love for cinema in any language, especially Hindi, which is well-known without further explanation. On second thought, cricket is another common factor that is treated as if it were a religion in the country. Indisputably, the heady concoction of cinema and cricket keeps Indian citizens engaged and fully engrossed.

  • There was a time when Friday was eagerly anticipated because new films would be released in theaters that day. The introduction of OTT platforms, particularly during the pandemic that forced the global community to stay at home, has simply revolutionized the entertainment medium like never before. People sitting in their homes can access a variety of entertainment programs from all over the world, satiating themselves with a delectable array of packages. Indian entertainment seekers, too, have embraced the enticing offers on hand, happily immersing themselves in a mouthwatering fare available at the touch of a remote.
  • Of course, entertainment is no longer limited to the comforts of the home in the form of television but is also available on smartphones thanks to digital mediums. The question here is whether the proliferation of digital mediums and platforms has limited the unique positioning enjoyed by traditional big-screen films, which were once the go-to entertainment medium for patrons. Let us delve deeper to better understand the current situation. Needless to say, the consumer has become more picky about the content available in comparison to big-screen releases. Cinemas built by some of the most prestigious film production houses used to generate enormous buzz, anticipation, excitement, and unbridled joy among moviegoers.

  • Why spend money to go to the movies when millions of people can watch quality but diverse content on television/smartphones? As a result, films released on a large budget, particularly in Hindi, have failed to live up to the hype, generating meager revenue that is barely enough to break even. Recently, even films starring major celebrities have fallen short of expectations. As a result, the Hindi film industry has seen a string of flops, prompting some honest soul-searching on the part of the production houses. It is no longer enough to have a superstar and a massive canvas to ensure a successful box office run.
  • The fundamentals of the entertainment industry have not changed. The content is always king, and masking it with glitz, glamour, and lavish settings/locations will not entice moviegoers to flock to the theatres. Regional cinema, on the other hand, appears to be attracting a lot of attention and money, which is leading to the production of pan-India films. Will well-known film production companies correct the basics and present well-structured plans to get back on track? Hopefully, yes.
