It might be one of your favorite movie of all times and you want to see it again and again. I am also sure that the end emotional part of the story had really touched your heart. The movie itself is well known among the crowd rather than the actual incident which happened almost 100 hundred years back. In the year of 1912, the RMS Titanic ship sank in the icy North Atlantic Ocean taking down 1500 life with it. There are many facts lying unknown which most of you don’t know about why the ship sank. So here are the list of top 10 facts related to ‘Titanic Ship’ that you might don’t know even today.

Dorothy Gibson was one of the big names of those days when there was a fashion of silent movies. Her movie ‘The Lucky Hold Up’ became a blockbuster hit on April 11, 1912 when she was on the Titanic. On this fateful day, 1500 people died. But she was the lucky one to survive. A few days later, she started the movie named ‘Saved from the Titanic’ where she played the leading role. She wore the same clothes that she was wearing on the Titanic and had gained a lot of popularity after the film was released.

You will be surprised to know that the Titanic incident was not the worst one in the history of marine disaster. Yeah, this is right. It was actually a German ship named ‘Wilhelm Gustoff’ which had caused a wider calamity than Titanic killing 9400 people, out of which 4000 were young children. This figure is much more than Titanic’s disaster.

After the Titanic incident took place, 306 bodies were discovered out of which 119 were badly damaged. There were several bodies that were found in a very bad condition and it was very difficult to bring them out. Hence, the decision was taken to bury these bodies in the sea only! Coffins were taken down into the sea along with tons of ice in the water to bury the dead bodies. Hard to believe, but true!

This truth might shock you. The Titanic ship was not a very popular thing in those days. Also, the makers of the ship never claimed it to be ‘unsinkable’. At that time, the main focus of the people was ‘Olympic’, which was the ‘sister ship’ of Titanic. There is in fact no footage available when the Titanic ship left the British shores. After the sinking of the ship, there was no image to show the tragedy. So media used images of ‘Olympic’ as it resembled ‘Titanic’ to a great extent.

If you have seen the movie, you must have noticed the orchestra team that kept playing the tune of ‘Nearer my God to Thee’ till the ship went down. Only three dead bodies could be discovered out of eight members of the orchestra team after the disaster incident. Among these three dead bodies, one was John Hume Law. A week after Hume’s death, his father received a bill from an employment firm in Liverpool, England stating that, “Sorry to hear the tragic death of your son, here is the bill of 5 shillings and 4 pennies, the cost of his uniform”. This really makes humanity feel ashamed.

In the Titanic movie, Leonardo Dicaprio was shown as a hero; his was a fictional character. However, Titaic incident did have a hero. He was Charles Herbert Lightoller, the most senior officer to survive. He was in charge of a lifeboat which had 30 people. The lifeboat got overturned. Charles brought another rescue vessel, through which people were taken to the shore.

Titanic ship had the capacity of 3547 people, but during its maiden voyage there were only 2223 aboard. It took exactly 160 minutes to sink the ship at a temperature of -2 degrees. Out of the total no. of people traveling on the Titanic, only 31.6% could be saved. Experts believe that around more than 50% of the passengers could have been brought to the shore. The first lifeboat which went to rescue people had a capacity of 65 but took only 28.

There was one key which could have saved many lives. David Blair was a second officer who was removed from the Titanic crew list. Blair was well aware with every small detail of Titanic. He forgot to hand over the keys of a locker which had the binoculars to the newly recruited officer. If the binoculars had been with him on the ship, the iceberg could have been detected sooner and lot more lives would have been saved.

It might be a coincident or something else, as author Morgan Robertson wrote the book ‘Futility or the Wreck of the Titan’ in 1898 where the content of the book shows a lot of similarity to what happened to the Titanic. 14 years after the book was written this incident took place. Hitting with an iceberg, insufficient lifeboats, death of a large number of people were some of the things that were found common between the book’s ship and Titanic.

 

No doubt Titanic incident was one of the most disastrous one in the world history. We can just pray that in future never ever such incident happens again.
