The BJP is Into Election Mode in Uttar Pradesh and Other States!

  • People would be wondering whether the Bharatiya Janata Party has already kick-started the election campaign in the most crucial state of Uttar Pradesh as also other states where the ensuing polls to the respective assemblies are due in the next few months. Reports appearing in the newspapers suggest that the Election Commission of India has initiated measures to undertake groundwork before freezing the dates for the polls. No less than the Prime Minister himself foraying into the Hindi heartland with intent during his recent whirlwind visit to Varanasi whilst throwing open the Kashi Vishwanath Dham clearly lends credence to the poll factor.

  • The Prime Minister’s project unveiling spree, garnished liberally with religious messaging, as also promises to make the ancient holy city a world-class tourist destination does not camouflage the possible narration of Hindutva gaining prominence during the upcoming elections. As things stand now, the Samajwadi Party appears to be the BJP’s biggest challenger followed by the distantly placed Bahujan Samaj Party and the Indian National Congress, respectively. As you are aware, the UP has in the past seen four-cornered contests, with a small transfer of votes making and unmaking electoral fortunes.
  • Any elections in India are solidly based on usual metrics of caste, community, and sub-region. As such, expect 2022 polls in UP to be no different even as elections may have to be held in the looming shadow of another Covid variant impacting million of common voters in the state. For BJP, the incumbent CM of UP has cultivated a brand of his own, whether for his supporters or critics who are large in number for sporting the Hindutva brand unabashedly. However, as showcased by grand ceremonies centred around the Jewar airport, the Purvanchal expressway, and the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, it is the MP from Varanasi, Narendra Modi, who will spearhead the BJP’s charge in UP.

  • No wonder, the infrastructure bonanza has given BJP bragging rights to play up the advantages of having the same party govern the Centre and state, a double-engine Sarkar, if you may please as the BJP is fond of mentioning. Make no mistake, subliminal and not-so-subliminal messaging on appeasement and Mughal emperors are just the beginning of what will likely be a long Hindutva playlist making its ubiquitous presence as the election day nears. Add to the BJP’s enormous electoral resources, its success in delivering some welfare schemes and micro caste management will prove to be substantial wherewithal in the armoury the opposition parties will find hard to breach.

  • Mind you, the BJP appears ahead at this point as indicated by opinion polls. SP’s biggest challenge is its limited appeal and as such, would desperately want to not just exploit anti-incumbency but also see how much of BSP’s Dalit and Muslim votes it can corner assuming Mayawati remains as listless as she appears now. On the other hand, Congress under the helm of Priyanka Gandhi is struggling to rouse voter interest despite making efforts at primarily targeting women voters. Since UP is the most unforgiving of all political tests in the tough political marketplace that is India, Congress doesn’t look convincing, at least now. Advantage BJP then, any naysayers?
