  • The recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket Board, has concluded with Team India retaining the much-coveted cup yet again. Team India defeated the other finalists, New Zealand, in the final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 08th March 2026 by a huge margin of 96 runs. In an anti-climactic turn of events, the final turned out to be an entirely one-sided affair with Team India piling up a huge 255 runs when invited to bat first by the opposition captain. Mind you, in a pressure-filled final expected where huge expectations reach stratospheric levels, it is always better to set up a target rather than chase. Strangely, the Kiwis chose the other way.

  • If the opposition sets up a decent enough score as a target, in this case, Team India clobbered 255 runs, the team chasing will be under tremendous pressure right from the first ball of the innings. Team India was off to a flying start with the man in form, Sanju Samson, setting the tone, and was duly followed by the man who was in desperate search of form, Abhishek Sharma. The rollicking start from the openers yielded 98 runs in mere 7.1 overs. Remember, Abhishek Sharma was in a wretched form right through the tournament, but came good when it mattered most with a belligerent half-century. Sanju Samson simply carried forward his brilliant turnaround, scoring a sublime 89 runs with some extremely eye-pleasing, effortless, and scintillating stroke play.

  • Team India suffered a blip in the later part of the innings, losing three quick wickets in an over of pacer James Neesham. However, all-rounder Shivam Dube’s cameo of 26 of 9 deliveries, including 03 fours and 02 sixers, ensured Team India crossed 250 comfortably. The Kiwis’ chase started on a disastrous note when the centurion from the semi-final against South Africa, Finn Allen, could not repeat the heroics despite receiving a reprieve right at the beginning of the innings. The other opener, Tim Seifert, waged a lonely battle scoring 52 runs, but was not good enough with the mounting run rate. The Indian bowling was on the button, never allowing the Kiwis to either stay in the hunt or threaten to take the game to the deep end. The cushion of a huge score helped.

  • In achieving the massive victory, Team India also rewrote several records. Not only did the Indian team retain the T20 World Cup after winning the last edition in the United States/West Indies – 2024, but it also won the trophy as a host nation now. Come to think of it, Team India till the final did not have a perfect game where the connoisseurs, experts, ex-players, and deeply invested fans would vouch without flinching one bit. But despite encountering several hiccups along the way, Team India could cross the finishing line in fashion, which augurs well for the cricket crazy nation. This also mirrors the depth of the game in a country that is bubbling with an enormous pool of talent from every nook and corner of the country. Well done, Team India!
