  • As all of the Military Establishments / Stations / Units are out of bounds to unauthorized
personnel, majority of the civilian population are not averse to expressing inquisitiveness in
understanding what exactly unfolds in the daily lives of the uniformed forces. Throwing
further light on the topic here, I would say majority of the populace are aware that discipline
occupies the most exalted position in the Services. Discipline and respect for the Superiors
are evident right from the professional conduct whilst discharging duties to the living
standards within the boundary walls of the campus too.

  • Head of the Establishment / Station / Unit is the de-facto authority entrusted with the power
to regulate all the policies as enunciated by the respective Forces’. Remember it is top-down
hierarchical organization that governs functioning of a typical establishment with well
demarcated command structure down the line. A typical Establishment is a wholly self-
sustained entity endowed with all paraphernalia one normally associates with a campus life.
Of course, there are exceptions to this norm as regards to forward areas usually along the
    borders.
  • Bachelors are accommodated in a separate enclosures at a considerable distance away from
the family accommodations. Yes, you read it right, families are allowed to stay with the
Service personnel if it is a peace time location say Bangalore, Mumbai or some Tier-II cities
like Bhopal, Indore or Agra for example. However, forward bases like Leh, Ladakh in the
North and Sri Ganganagar, Anoopgarh in the West does not provide family accommodation
keeping in line with the operational necessities.

  • Thankfully, personnel posted to a forward base from peace time location is allowed to retain
family accommodation for a specified period. Peace time Establishments does boast of all
modern amenities viz. shopping complex / theater / auditorium as well as schools in the
form of Kendriya Vidyalayas as the case may be. Movements are not restricted for the
personnel to venture out but there are customary timings that are required to be followed
strictly. On the other hand, forward bases lack as much comforts in comparison and are also
more stringent in enforcing restricted movements to / from the establishment.

  • Since the Forces embody amalgamation of different cultures, traditions, languages and
habits, the social melting pot is usually vibrant, colorful and engaging to say the least. Family
gatherings are encouraged during festivities and some such occasions but breaching the
established social code is a big no! Camaraderie is abundantly evident and the Service
personnel are most adept at making their lives as cheerful as is possible.
