When it comes to parenting, there are few things that are as universal. But it can be an interesting experience for Indian parents who settle in a different country. Parenting is surely a hotchpotch of things for such people.
Let’s see, 7 such differences that Indians face when they raise their children’s in different countries-
1. Sleep separately
The norm in US is to do the nursery and let the baby sleep separately on its own in a separate room from birth. Kids in US are expected to stay in their own rooms from birth. On the other hand, in India, we all know, co-sleeping is a norm, however, people are trying to change it a bit but it still exists in most places.
2. Food instructions
In few Indian cultures, an old custom is followed by giving honey to a child from the day they are born. Other myth of giving banana when a child constipates is followed.
On the other hand, in the US, Honey is a strict no-no for a child. As honey has the risk of botulism, which is a severe kind of food poisoning, which can be caused by the bacteria content in honey. And for the Banana myth in the US, the moment the child has diarrhea, they follow the BRAT diet – which is Banana, rice, apple and toast.
3. Have the child eat on its own
In India, usually mums carry their child on your hips and walk around, try to show them the sun and the moon, and distract them and then feed them. But in the US, the kids made to sit on the high chair and left where they are expected to feed themselves. Yes Of course, it is usually too messy at first, but soon children tend to understand and get the hang of it and become really efficient at eating.
4. Schedules
It is believed in US that scheduling kids are critical for smooth parenting. Children need to be fed at the same time every day, nap at the same time and go to bed on time. They follow their schedules strictly. They believe that if they enforce these schedules on children’s they help to set a fixed pattern in children. On the other hand, in India, the schedules followed are far away from any predictions.
5. Sleeping Time
Sleeping time for children in America is too early they are put to bed as early as 6pm.There are a lot of books available which tell you how to get your kids early to bed. US parents believe that children need to be in bed early in order to get enough number of hours of sleep. And on the other hand Indian kids stay up till late! Mostly Indian kids sleep when their parents sleep; there is no real rules or regulations followed to put them to bed.
6. Emphasis on sport
In the US a lot of importance is given to sports right from when children are small. Right from the time the child can start toddling around. Physical activities are a big part of their life. Be it swimming, baseball and football, all kinds of sports consider a very important part of the kid’s life. Even the parents spend a lot of time, in driving their kids to various sporting and extracurricular activities. In India sports is yet to be taken on that kind of a central role.
7. Emphasis on independence
A lot of importance is given to kids being independent in the US. Right from the start the children’s are trained to sleep, eat, and wear their clothes independently. Once they start growing a little, they are expected to do little works in the house according to their age and ability. They are expected to gradually get more and more independent until they move out of the house at about 18 years of age. And as we all know, Indian parents can never even dream of charging their kids for staying with them. Kids in India grow up under their parent’s vigilance, but they are not expected to do everything independently, they are always guided, even for the littlest of things.
