  • Speaking for the first time aftermath of Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not only aggressive, impressive, clear-minded, and forthright on the heinous act of terrorism killing innocent civilian tourists in Pahalgam but also enunciated a clear shift in our strategy where the hitherto held narrative will not hold water anymore while interacting with out neighbour. Gone are the days when Indian think tanks would be subdued in responding to perpetual terror attacks on civilians and establishments. Punitive action follows. The three counterattacks in Uri, Pulwama, and now Pahalgam firmly reaffirm that India can no longer be taken for granted, expecting her to remain a mere mute spectator. Surgical strikes will result even deep inside Pakistan.

  • As the PM mentioned in no uncertain terms, India will not be an aggressor but will put forth peace, showcasing both our political maturity and instinctive pacifism. He said this is not an era of war, reiterating what was famously told to Putin. However, while mentioning that this is not an era of terrorism either, reinforcing the peace paradigm. Mind you, what’s terrorism if not the most reprehensible form of violence? It’s important to reemphasize that the way India conducted itself during Operation Sindoor reiterates the first principles of pacifism – that we shall not be the aggressor. Of course, Modi was categorical that shakti (strength) will be the guarantor of shanti (peace). Even DG Air Operations made a similar point: without fear, there can be no love. Period.

  • Mind you, India made peace its civilizational value millennia ago, and in recent history, it has been enshrined in our Constitution, which stresses international peace and security. War simply is not an instrument of state policy in India as it is in, say, Israel or Russia. Invading a country for its lithium or petroleum reserves or territory would be unthinkable here. Even our nuclear doctrine, unlike Pakistan’s, is clear on the point of no first use. While Pakistan tried to paint Op Sindoor as an unprovoked Indian aggression, India declared at the outset that it was an answer to Pahalgam and confined to terrorist bases. When has an aggressor taken such pains to ensure civilian areas remain untouched as India did on May 7? Never. Throughout history, this land has sent out conquering ideas, not armies.

  • Further, our country is blessed with such a rich heritage, tradition, culture, and legacy of Hindu and Buddhist philosophies spread around the world in antiquity. And together with Jain and Sikh teachings, we have and are helping the East and the West make sense of their rushed modern lives today. As PM Modi rightly mentioned, terror and trade cannot go together, water and blood cannot go hand in hand, and most importantly, terror and talks will not happen either. Yes, nuclear threats will not hold any significance too. Indian armed forces called the bluff of the Pakistan army’s nuclear threat by calibrated and targeted air strikes nearer to the facility. Peace is part of India’s DNA, but when it comes to protecting itself, we will not hesitate to retaliate with full force.
