- Ever since the Pahalgam attack on the tourists resulted in the killings of innocent civilians holidaying in the picturesque region of the Kashmir Valley, it was given that the Indian think tank led by the resolute Prime Minister Narendra Modi would respond in kind. Expectedly, the Indian military carried out well-coordinated attacks on nine targets inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir in a swift pre-dawn move. The justice to the families of the innocent victims was delivered, and the entire country, irrespective of ideologies/philosophies/affiliations/faiths/religion, stood as one, applauding the bravery of the Indian armed forces and the Union Government for acting decisively.

- Of course, the Pakistani military was expected to retaliate since the domestic pressure from the warmongering mullahs to ordinary citizens would be incessant, baying for revenge. The night attacks using drones and other projectiles firmly showcase how the Pakistani military is proceeding with its skewed rationale. And this has continued for three days in succession now. Pak generals should know that a far better-resourced India has not only thwarted those attempts successfully but also will respond to every escalation in equal measure. The Indian air defence systems have been at the forefront of foiling every attempt at escalation from across the borders. Unmistakably, the generals in Rawalpindi GHQ are leading Pakistan down a dangerous path of escalation.

After Operation Sindoor successfully targeted multiple terrorist bases inside Pakistan, there were signs that Pakistan’s civilian government was willing to de-escalate. Unfortunately, Pak army swatted such a notion aside, vowed retaliation, and forced the civilian dispensation to fall in line. Indeed, this is the real tragedy of Pakistan, where the civilian government has been reduced to a mere rubber stamp by military generals. Nonetheless, the generals must know that in the current round of escalation, cessation of hostilities must come from Pakistan. India has and will respond forcefully to every provocation from across the border. Undoubtedly, the Pak army must be aware that this is the new normal under the dispensation of PM Narendra Modi.

- Some saner voices must make the Pak army realise that the escalation was initiated by them with the April 22 Pahalgam attack. India only responded with a measured, high-precision operation against the terrorists and their handlers. Yet, Pak generals chose to further increase provocations by trying to target multiple Indian military installations with drones and missiles in the last three days. That all of them were intercepted and shot down by India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems, which included the top-of-the-line S-400, highlights New Delhi’s superiority in this regard. Since Balakot 2019, India has spent considerable resources on getting a state-of-the-art air defence grid up and running. Will better sense prevail across the border? Unlikely.
