  • The recent Hathras gang rape and killing of a Dalit woman has yet again stirred the conscience of the country for the brutality, ruthlessness, and scant disregard for humanity with which the horrendous act was perpetrated on the hapless. More distressing to note was the way the State authorized cremation of the deceased in the early hours without the presence of family members. The alarming rise in the crime graph against the women, irrespective of caste equations, is a huge cause for concern.

  • It is quite exasperating to keep witnessing depressive narration being played out with such regularity where women are not only violated in spirit, body, and emotions with impunity but also perpetual lack of visible changes in the largely patriarchal mindset of the society treating the other gender anything but on the equal keel. Incredulous to know that atrocities against women continue unabated across the length and breadth of the country, especially Dalit women are singularly targeted, despite stringent laws promulgated to safeguard from violating the same is unfathomable.
  • Our society has reserved an extremely special reverential place for womenfolk rightfully acknowledging the Mother Nature’s blessings endowing the women with the indisputable legacy to sustain the life itself in the form of giving birth to progenies. Such a wonderful gift allows us to sustain the humankind and its footprint forever or till life exists on this beautiful planet is an indisputable factor. No wonder, men by nature are tasked to perform second-fiddle in sustaining humankind as compared to women.

  • The above fact is beyond discussion and elaboration tantamount to nothing but a reiteration of the universal truth. Come to think of it, we as a country also adore women by worshipping many female goddesses seeking divine blessings to prosper in whatever endeavors undertaken/initiated or for that matter professing unflinching belief in the supremacies of many deities. Our epics, folklore, practices, belief-systems, and legends are brimming with tales of divine female forms so deeply revered since times immemorial.
  • Women are placed on a pedestal is underlining the obvious without any sign of questioning the established legacy even now. This being the case, why vulnerable and sensitive fellow human beings are subjected to inhuman treatment is beyond comprehension. The extremely contradictory behavioral pattern on display is hard to ignore wherein divinity personified goddesses are worshipped on the one hand and living female beings are desecrated/brutalized mercilessly on the other hand. Venerating men at the cost of denigrating women simply does not fit the narrative anymore in the present day demanding honest introspection to correct such glaring anomalies forthwith.

  • Patriarchy will have to pave way for equality recognizing the parity of sexes by starting the practice right from birth. The onus is on the parents to ensure the girlchild is not treated differently from the boychild by completely abjuring biased treatment. Understand the society is but a microcosm of individuals and we, the people will have to step-up in ensuring unprejudiced treatment to our progenies whether male or female. No sooner this fact is comprehended and practiced diligently, the society will witness welcome change. Hope the same ensue sooner than later.
