A new study has found that men lose more matter than women in the putamen volume and caudate nucleus, the part of the brain which deals with movement and emotional processing. The study revealed that women mind has better longevity than men.
Men’s brain decline faster than women’s!
An oldage may state, ‘Men age like a fine wine, but women age like glass of milk!’ However, a team of scientists have found that women’s mind have better longevity than men i.e. men’s brains age faster than women.
The researchers at the University of Szeged in Hungary have scanned the brain structures of 53 men and 50 women.
The average age remained at 32, with the oldest participant being 58 years and the youngest 21.
The results of the researchers showed the differences between the two sexes in their subcortical brain structures.
The researchers said, ‘Strikingly, grey matter has declined at a faster rate in men than in women emphasizing the interplay between genders and ageing on subcortical structures’.
They further added that ‘Changes of subcortical structures have been consistently related to certain neuropsychiatric disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Parkinson’s disease, etc’.
‘Understanding these changes might also yield further insight in the course and prognosis of these disorders’.
It was also revealed that the thalamus, the brain’s main relay station for passing the information around the brain, was also impacted. Researchers noted that their work may even be able to inform treatment of some other neurological disorders like ADHD.
This study is published in the Brain Imaging and Behaviour journal.
