  • The Indian democratic form of governance necessitates the treasury and the opposition benches to not only proactively indulge in robustly debating the proposed bills that will become acts, but also ensure any concerns having wider ramifications on the countrymen are fine-tuned before getting passed. The two Houses of Parliament, viz., the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, are expected to adhere to these time-tested procedures, upholding the sanctity of the democratic processes as enunciated in the Constitution. Mind you, the Indian Constitution is premised on – we the People, of the People, and for the people – signifying how citizens are the real stakeholders and the elected representatives are just that, elected by us to represent us.

  • Yes, we are aware of how the two national parties, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, alongside a few regional parties, make up the political landscape. Of course, the Indian political landscape is strewn with the labyrinthine caste equations where vote bank politics rules the roost. Now, the political alignment at the Centre is basically formed on the secular versus communal narrative, which gets accentuated around the states on similar grounds. The true worth of any democratic country is the strength, robustness, intent, and purposeful discourse that should ideally occur during the Parliamentary session. Not only the treasury benches, but the onus is on the opposition benches to keep the former on their toes on matters of national importance.

  • Unfortunately, what has become a regular occurrence in the last few years is disruptions of varied kinds that simply defeat the very purpose of healthy Parliamentary debates known to throw up epochal ideation to push ahead with the country’s growth prospects. However, it must be a greatly disturbing trend to watch how the Parliamentary debates are turning out to be a mudslinging and below-the-belt exchange of views/counterviews from our representatives, cutting across party affiliations. It is here that the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) is expected to play an extremely aggressive, purposeful, and mature/wiser role to make the treasury benches answerable on matters having greater importance on the nation’s growth prospects.

  • Going by the look of things, the present LOP is often seen not present during the crucial discussions/debate. And when present, his personal convictions about the Treasury Bench and the Prime Minister often cloud judgment when accusations/counter accusations fly thick and fast without any substance/proof to substantiate such claims. And when the winter session of the Parliament is on, the LOP is not around, choosing to visit Germany instead. This is not the first time that he has not been around when the Parliament is in session. As the LOP, his presence and active participation in the session lend credence to the whole proceedings. Even the opposition bloc should be miffed with the LOP choosing to visit foreign shores, missing out on crucial moments.
