  • One of the most fascinating aspects emanating from the world of cutting-edge technology development is the dynamism associated with the vertical that keeps changing at such an alarming rate. Those countries heavily invested in the R & D on these technologies would have a head start as compared to other countries that would be really doing a catch-up rather than staying ahead of the race. Such is the fast-paced advancements of modern-day technology, like Artificial Intelligence (AI), that the astonishing speed with which newer solutions are being unleashed makes one feel frightened and excited alike. However, conversely speaking, the benefits these freshly minted offerings can be hugely beneficial to humankind cannot be ignored as well.

  • As such, it is worthwhile to comprehend where India stands vis-à-vis advancements in the field of AI, and when the country can achieve AI sovereignty with AI models and data centres to be immune to foreign pressure. This question is not only relevant but also deserving of serious consideration from the Indian leadership. As we know, New Delhi will be hosting the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in February. Some of the big names from the industry, like Sundar Pichai, Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, and other royalty, will be making their presence felt. Would this summit herald a new beginning for India vis-à-vis initiating measures to eventually attain AI sovereignty sooner than later? The time alone will decide this.

  • The moot point to ponder over here is where we stand in the AI pecking order when some of the most advanced countries have already made a headstart, with the US far ahead of everyone else. Let’s dwelve. India may not have so many data centres, nor a lead in the LLM race, but it is a vital source of data, which is grist for the AI mill. A combination of a large population and cheap data has made India a Niagara of free training data for AI models, most of which aren’t Indian. As a result, we remain spring chickens of AI while they’ve become mother hens. If AI were merely a tool to write Valentine’s notes and sketch pictures, this wouldn’t be a concern. But AI is perhaps the most disruptive tech we have found so far.

  • Notably, one of Anthropic’s new tools can check legal contracts for loopholes in seconds. Other AI can diagnose patients equally quickly. On the battlefield, AI can identify and destroy targets. It’s no toy and therefore deserves attention as a national priority. Two key concerns at this point are sovereign AI and AI sovereignty. Sovereign AI is all the infra and tech – data centres, AI models – that we as a nation control. Servers are located abroad, processing data, and all we see are results. This is not sovereign AI. The country’s defence capabilities cannot be built on this model. India has begun work on a sovereign AI, but it needs to hurry up. The goal is AI sovereignty when all data in the system is subject to Indian laws, and govt and businesses know how AI models are processing it to arrive at results. The summit’s aim should be to speed up collaboratingboth aims.
