Double Speak on Social Distancing By the Political Parties is a Joke!

  • It is extremely difficult to comprehend how nonchalantly our political parties can preach on one hand and completely ignore to follow the same on the other hand. Paradoxes seem to be the order of the day going by the doublespeak of the politicians representing respective parties amid growing signs of the second wave of the dreaded coronavirus. The country is witnessing a sharp rise in confirmed infection rates from week to week, and the latest surge of more than 1.5 lakh this week amply demonstrates that the graph is headed north much to our consternation. Expectedly, knee-jerk reactions are already underway from the authorities concerned.

  • As the cases in several states mount, led by Maharashtra, there is a great cause for concern since the debilitating effects of the last years’ economically suffocating lockdowns are still afresh. The calls for observing safety and health protocols are falling on deaf ears. Unable to contain the rising cases, the state governments’ are resorting to unyielding measures such as night curfews, semi-lockdowns, lockdowns, and some other restrictions severely affecting the day-to-day activities of the people. Needless to mention, the livelihoods of lower strata of the society increasingly appear to be staring at a bleak future yet again vis-à-vis these blunt measures.
  • As the government authorities and medical experts exhort unequivocally to follow social distancing norms, wearing of masks, and hand washes hygiene, the election rallies underway in many of the states across the country is sending a contradictory message as the political parties address the congregations exceeding a lakh in number at most of the times. Forget about maintaining social distancing measures when you have such a large number of humans clubbed together at such proximity. Most worryingly, people present during these rallies in great numbers are also loath to put on protective masks endangering others as well.

  • What message is being conveyed to the countrymen when the Prime Minister down to Chief Ministers and other elected representatives address these rallies without wearing a mask amid real fear of the second wave striking with vengeance? What is the use of threatening common people with fines for not wearing a mask when the leaders entrusted with the responsibility to run the country are breaking the rules with such impunity? Contradictions galore is ruling the situation as the policymakers break the safety and health rules mandated for stemming the dreaded virus from spreading menacing tentacles.
  • Besides political rallies, religious congregations like the Kumbh Mela where lakhs of devotees are allowed to participate without any covid negative certificates are potential superspreaders who might carry the infection to nook and corners of the country in no time further exacerbating the scary situation staring at us. Therefore, the authorities are urged to scrap all movement restrictions, but ensure strict implementation of wearing masks, speed up the vaccination process, and set an example by leading from the front by diligently observing the protocols. Otherwise, the situation will get out of hand severely affecting all of us.
