There are many regions in India, which appear on the Indian map, but how many of the territories can be 100% claimed by India as not a disputed region. Here is the list of seven such territories which appear on the Indian map, but are highly disputed with other countries so as to whether it is our area or their.
1.Aksai Chin
Aksai Chin is located in the northwestern part of the Tibetan Plateau which is immediately south of the Kunlun Mountains. It is governed by the People’s Republic of China as a part of Hotan Country (Hotan Prefecture of Xinjiang Region). It is a disputed region since India considers it to be a part of Jammu and Kashmir. There is a very little evidence to prove this, the evidence suggests that a few true locals in the area have Buddhist beliefs while some Muslim Uyghurs also live in the area due to trade purposes, India claims it to be a part of Ladakh District (State of Jammu & Kashmir). Both India and China have agreed to respect the line of Actual Country.
2. Depsang Plains
They are located on the border of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir; it falls under the disputed region of Aksai Chin. The Chinese army had occupied most of these plains in 1962. This is currently disputed with both china occupying and claiming the eastern part of Depsang Plains while India occupies the western part and claiming the whole of Depsang Plains.
3. Arunachal Pradesh
Arunachal Pradesh is located in the north east, and borders the states of Nagaland and Assam to the south, it also shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Burma in the east, Nagaland in the south and the People’s republic of China in the north. The majority of the area is claimed by China as it believes it to be a part of South Tibet. The northern border of the state reflects the McMahon Line, which was a controversial treaty between the United Kingdom and the Tibetan government which was never accepted by the Chinese government and not widely enforced by the Indian government until 1950, The state is administered by India.
4. Kashmir
This is known by the whole of India, as because this topic has been used quite a number of times in Bollywood. Recently in Salman Khan’s starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ a reference was made with this issue. 3 wars have been fought between India and Pakistan over this disputed region, making it the major dispute, in addition to the disputed state of Kashmir there are several other territorial disputes which exist between India and Pakistan.
5. Sir Creek
Sir Creek is a strip of water which is located in Rann of Kutch Marshlands, it has a length of around 96 kilometers. Pakistan has claimed the line to follow the eastern shore of the estuary while India has claimed it to be a center line. Before India’s independence the region was a part of Bombay Presidency (British India). After India’s independence in 1947, Sindh had become a part of Pakistan while Raan of Kutch remained a part of India. Pakistan Marines and the Indian Army are deployed on both sides of the border.
6. Saltoro
Saltoro is an another disputed region between India and Pakistan. It is located in the heart of Karakoram on the southwest side of Siachen Glacier. It is a subrange of Karakoram range. India claims it to be a part of Jammu and Kashmir while Pakistan claims it to be a part of Gilgit-Baltistan by Pakistan. In 1984, India had assumed military control of the main peaks while Pakistani forced into the glacial valleys to the west. Despite of high peaks and climbing opportunities it is visited very less (in exception of military forces) due to Siachen-conflict.
7. Siachen Glacier
It is located in eastern Karakorum’s in the Himalayas east of the actual ground position line between India and Pakistan. India controls all of the area by itself, including all tributary glaciers. At 70km long it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and the second longest in world’s non polar areas.
So these are the seven territories which are disputed.
