- The pandemic is playing hide and seek with the majority of the affected countries would be an understatement going by the unfolding events of the past six months or so. None of us would have envisaged where our lives headed to when it all started in the month of March. The journey so far has been anything but pleasant will be vociferously seconded by each one of us is beyond arguments. Also, we all know for sure is that there is no vaccine invented yet other than the personal protective mask covering the nose and mouth to keep us safe from the marauding virus.

- Agreed, the lockdown enforced with stringent restrictions has robbed millions from livelihood and scores of lives as well. Subsequent unlock guidelines have ensured the economic activities are back on track to almost pre-pandemic days. Indicators available amply demonstrates there are positive signs visible that should delight all those stakeholders reeling under the impact of economic inactivity for too long now. However, rising infection cases in the country, more so in a few states, are a matter of great concern demanding exercising of caution by not letting our guard down.
- As mentioned above, the only available effective tool presently to keep the virus at bay is to wear a personal mask in a proper manner with an express intention to safeguard self as well as others who we interact with for various reasons. Most worryingly, what is observed on the ground is far from pleasant and acceptable as general people appear convinced that the virus is vanquished. Demeanor on display strongly suggests people are not averse anymore to let go of their defenses by failing to observe social distancing norms as well as improper usage of personal masks.

- Worried at the rising infection rate, the Karnataka government introduced strict measures like imposing fines to the tune of Rupees one thousand to ensure mandatory compliance of wearing mask while out in the public. As people kept flouting the health and safety guidelines, understandably the government had little option other than introducing these measures to curb the spread. Cannot fault the intent of the authorities though the amount is beyond the means of ordinary people slowly picking the threads after a long lull.
- After the television media raised concerns about the steep fine amount, the government has revised the same to Rupees Two Hundred Fifty in urban areas and Rupees One Hundred in rural areas, respectively. We, as responsible citizens, should understand that the fight against the virus is not only from the government’s end but also incumbent on our part to strengthen the efforts by adhering to the protocols devised for the purpose as well. The more we delay in following the norms, the further waiting is guaranteed in returning to normalcy as all yearn for so desperately. The choice is ours.
