Reminiscing Yesteryear Virtues of Cinemas: Nostalgic Revisiting

  • Confined as we are to the comforts of our homes in a way has promptly opened up a few hitherto passionately followed indulgences after decades. Keeping in line with the changing times, while growing up we were all so zealously evinced interests in little things which brought us immense pleasure and sense of contentment. Irrespective of social standings, caste, creed or religion, simple pleasures of life was fully acknowledged and appreciated. Watching movies was one such endeavor that was keenly anticipated by the families.

  • Trust me, visiting cinema theaters used to be one big celebration time a few decades back. As a corollary, limited publications of newspapers carrying articles’ / write-ups about cinema used to evoke frenzied reactions amongst the followers. Heroes and heroines of yore were especially the most prominent subjects of adulation which used to reach crescendo if it was a hugely popular superstar(s) of one’s liking.

  • There existed clear distinction between regional superstars as well as national superstars though, mainly from the Hindi film industry which was uniquely positioned back then as well. In fact, competition between both the industries was not only healthy but also influenced the launching of projects based on the borrowing of storylines from the other. Reigning regional superstar’s commanded huge fan following bettering the Hindi counterparts manifold.

  • In hindsight, modest production values back then were suitably compensated by taut storyline, crisp editing, melodious soundtracks and believable content as well as well-etched characterizations, respectively. Outstanding performances from thespians concerned more often than not left indelible marks for mulling over and over again. Entertainment in the pure sense was pristinely established without the in your face marketing blitzkrieg and over the top/make-believe world one associates presently.
  • Comparisons from different eras might temporarily create sensationalism but inevitably falters in providing accurate distinctions since there are innumerable variables separating the same. It could be circumstances, societal evolutions and practices, production values and constantly evolving characterizations/performances, just to name a few. Of course, what has not changed from one generation to another is the inherent philosophy of cinema, entertainment.

  • Deeply embedded wonderful memories of yore are flooding out in a torrent while watching those treasure trove of classical movies/performances that are matchless and priceless. Flow of life might have swept us away in a mystifying sway sing long. Nonetheless, the opportunity presented in the form of forced lockdown has certainly succeeded in reconnecting to our forgotten past. I am latching onto it with absolute gratitude and vigor.
