  • Not for nothing, the Indian elections are termed as the Dance of Democracy with vivid, fascinating, unpredictable, and intriguing layers forming the crux of the most elaborate electoral process in the world. Of course, scores of Indian citizens may not be too inclined to immerse themselves in the way the electoral process pans out in the country. But trust me, innumerable citizens wish to keep track of what’s happening around them vis-à-vis political play with various quotients usually associated with entertainment available for consumption in our elections, too. No Indian election is bereft of wholesome entertainment, you see, with every element of intrigue woven into the narration that could place a typical Bollywood movie pale in comparison.

  • As we are aware, the state assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal will be held this month. In fact, the electorate has already voted in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, respectively. Tamil Nadu will vote on 23rd April. West Bengal elections will be held in two phases on 23rd and 29th April 2026. The usual high-pitched electioneering has happened/is happening in these states.  Of course, the results will be declared on 04th May 2026. People familiar with the usual narratives would have noticed how the political parties have brandished communal versus secular narration to their hilt. Also, the promises, assurances, reassurances, and incentives have been bandied about with gay abandon. Will that transform into votes, though?

  • What would the politically inclined citizens be looking forward to from the interplay of various parties in the fray? Will the electorate bless the parties merely based on the usual offerings in the form of guarantees? The trend witnessed in the last few years is how the political parties, irrespective of affiliations/ideologies/philosophies, are impressing upon the women voters through cash transfers/freebies. The BJP is always on the button vis-à-vis electioneering, which is known across the country. The saffron brigade is leaving no stone unturned to assume power for the first time in West Bengal. The high-voltage campaign between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised the pitch several notches in Bengal.

  • Will the people of West Bengal choose the saffron brigade over the incumbent TMC? Will the anti-incumbency factor have a bearing on the eventual outcome, allowing the BJP to make its presence felt finally? The BJP CM in Assam, Hemanta Biswa Sarma, is exuding immense confidence in the party forming the government for the third time in succession. Would the outcome be in favour of the BJP? Kerala may not throw any surprises since the LDF and UDF alliances will be fighting it out directly. Tamil Nadu will also not throw any surprises since the DMK and the AIADMK are in a direct fight. It’s amply clear from the above that the latest set of state assembly election results will go as per the script, save for some anticipated excitement in West Bengal.
