  • The moment one sets eyes on the subject matter would instantly evoke the by now all too familiar smirk of having read the same umpteenth time, but without any conclusions that are palatable and relatable. Every expert representing the health and wellness field would forcefully wish us to believe that what he/she has to mention on the topic is the fact. Incomprehensible statistics and figures are dished out to substantiate the claim made on the matter, which is as old as humankind itself. Make no mistake, physical activities alone are the means to ensure our fitness levels remain at an acceptable level since the modern-day world has made our quest for robust health an anathema, courtesy of innumerable amenities available at the touch of a smartphone screen.

  • The moot point to ponder over here is what should be believed and assiduously pursued to keep our physical fitness levels satisfactorily, if not optimally. Also, note that the majority of us do not provide enough attention to maintaining physical fitness levels despite knowing the perils of leading a sedentary lifestyle. It’s no surprise that many of us prefer reading about indulging in exercise rather than actively/passionately pursuing it. Little wonder, we also tend to cherrypickbits; there are innumerable surveys/articles/reports/studies on the matter that suit us. If only reading about exercise counted as exercise, we could all be as fit as any top-notch international sports personality like Cristiano Ronaldo or our own Virat Kohli.

  • And to those who wish to be regular at exercising but are unable to push themselves to go through the rigmarole, would desperately love to read on the topic, especially studies reporting huge health benefits of just a little exercise. A blessing in disguise, anyone? It’s the perfect accompaniment to a breakfast of any mouthwatering but calorie-laden typical Indian savoury. Of course, LPG availability permitting. We have also trained ourselves to read different studies in a very specialized way. Take the recent American College of Sports Medicine’s new strength training guidelines. It’s a complex document, but we have plucked from it a shifty takeaway – that just two sessions of basic strength exercise every week are way superior to sweating five days.

  • Isn’t this a funnier read than India being the diabetes capital of the world? And it’s no different than Indians watching sports obsessively, but passively. Only 9% of adults say they play a sport at all. Even that number would likely come down dramatically if we checked how many people did what they said they do today. There’s a special type of person who has read approximately 4000 articles about VO2 max training, can quote Bryan Johnson chapter and verse, but whose main physical activity is scrolling through said articles, while horizontal on the couch. All too often, consuming content about fitness is not a precursor to it, but a substitute. That said, exercising regularly at least 4-5 times a week is non-negotiable. Go for it, guys, more diligently, though!
