One the eve of India Bangladesh Asia Cup final, Left hand Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has said that if his side plays to its potential then they can defeat the formidable Indian team and win the Asia Cup trophy for the first time.
Tamim also expressed confidence in handling India’s new sensation, Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rattling opposition stumps with his Yorkers since making his debut against Australia.
Tamim mentioned,
“We have had discussions in our team meeting about Jasprit Bumrah. We have seen footages of his bowling. I have done my homework on him and let’s see how it goes. But it’s not only Bumrah but every Indian player is important for us. But we would like to focus on our strength. If we get a good ball, we will respect the ball and if it needs to be punished, we will do it.”
Tamim recalls how India lost to Bangladesh last year
Tamim recalls how Bangladesh defeated India last year and remembers the six that he hit off Zaheer Khan during their upset victory during the 2007 50-over World Cup in Port of Spain.
“I have forgotten about that match, but you guys always make me remember. Yes, we have had some memorable matches against India. I believe if we play to our potential, there is every possibility of beating India. We have defeated them in 50-over format last year and there is no reason we can’t repeat that in 20-over format,” Tamim told reporters after practice session.

Bangladesh pulled off a historic first victory at home and also their first-ever win against India in a jam packed Banghabandhu Stadium in Dhaka, bowling India out for 214 to win by 15 runs and level the one-day series 1-1.

Fittingly to be said as one the biggest upsets in Cricket history, Bangladesh pulled the rug from under India’s feet at Port-of-Spain, for their third win in all World Cup games. This resulted in Rahul Dravid led Indian side to be eventually eliminated in the group stage itself.

Bangladesh spoiled Tendulkar’s party after he became the first batsman to make a 100 international centuries, getting to the milestone against them at the Shere Bangla stadium in Mirpur. Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan delivered an improbable win for Bangladesh overhauling India’s target of 293 by scoring 46 and 49 respectively and overhauling the target with 4 balls to spare. Eventually India did not make to the finals.

Mustafizur Rahman took 5 for 50 on debut as Mahendra Dhoni led side lost by 79 runs in an embarrassing defeat. Nineteen-year-old Mustafizur Rahman stormed over India’s batsmen with an assortment of cutters to become the second Bangladesh bowler after Taskin Ahmed to claim a five-wicket haul on debut. Chasing Bangladesh’s 307 India were bowled out at 228.
- 21st June 2015 – Bangladesh India Bilateral series 2nd Match
Mustafizur Rahman was the hero again running through India’s batting with a six-wicket haul to add to his five-for on ODI debut in the 1st match. This was Bangladesh’s first ever bilateral series win against India. Mustafizur’s 6 for 43, the second best figures by a Bangladesh bowler in ODIs, skittled India for 200, before the home comfortably reached the target in 45 overs. India lost to Bangladesh in 2nd consecutive match.
