The community leaders at are considering to implement a program called “FASTER Saves Lives”. This could lead to actually arming the school teachers and staff at the Kent Center School. The selection board voted 2-1 this week to bring this free fun-training program. However according to the third selection personnel from the board Gov. Dannel P. Malloy it is outrageous and would put people at risk.
“FASTER” Saves Lives Programme at Kent Schools
1. FASTER stands for “Faculty/Administrator Safety Training and Emergency Response”
2. This is a free gun-training programme which is offered by an Ohio-based non-profit organisation.
3. Designed to train school staff in the event of an active shooter.
4. Volunteers of this program will allow then to carry weapons at school.
5. Three-day class in Ohio which offers 26 hours of extensive training.
6. Each school selects staff members who are agreeable, competent and capable.
7. Training in armed response, crisis management and emergency medical aid is provided by the experts on school violence provide.
Why did Gov. Dannel P. Malloy vote against “FASTER”?
A three people board had voted for the selection of this programme. However, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy voted against it. The governor is completely against the proposal and said that he would aggressively work to stop the proposal.
Malloy said that this idea should be given the worst idea award. He feels it is not about school safety and will make the schools less safe.
He added further that he has no problem with schools who wish to have armed law enforcement personnel or school guards who have undergone extensive training. But this 26-hour training is a vigilante activity, he questioned further is this 26 hour training enough? if yes then why police officers undergo months and months of extensive training.
Malloy feels this idea to be simply outrageous and would put people lives at risk. He questioned how can the school authority allow guns at school?
Purpose behind “FASTER”
This idea doesn’t come with any motive to replace the police and EMTs, but actually to allow the school teachers, administrators and other personnel on site to be able to actively stop school violence and render medical aid immediately.
This idea was proposed by Jeff Parkin, who is a Republican elected in Kent in November. The local board of education has the authority to decide whether to implement the program at this rural town’s only school. This idea will be reviewed by the school board in the March meeting as expected. The residents of Kent gave mixed reactions on this proposal.
The end decision on the implementation of this programme will be taken by the Board of Education. Arming the school staff to defend themselves and the children against any attack makes perfect sense. But on the other hand will be a good idea for teachers to have a gun in the class? What will the impact be on the children largely?
