In a revealing interview to BBC’s Desert Island Discs; the world’s richest man, Bill Gates has opened up regarding his intense approach to work. He also talked about his relationship with Steve Jobs, revealed his Desert Island playlist, and also shared his personal views on ‘Why it’s so important to give back’.
Bill Gates, a passive-aggressive nightmare!
In the early years of his career, the mild-mannered billionaire and philanthropist, used to be a much harder figure. He was often regarded as a hard negotiator and also a demanding boss!
Bill Gates has just admitted that how he used to keep track on his employees by memorising their number plates in order to see when they were arriving and leaving his office.
He admitted being ‘fanatical about work’ in the interview, and said ‘I had to be a little careful not to try and apply my standards to how hard others worked. I knew everybody’s licence plate so I could look out the parking lot and see when people come in. Eventually I had to loosen up as the company got to a reasonable size’.
Obviously back in the late 1970s, Microsoft was a lot smaller, and was started by 11 people. Today, we assume and hope that he doesn’t memorise all the license plates of the thousands of his employees!
Steve Jobs was a good friend
During the interview, Bill Gates also spoke on numerous occasions about Apple’s co-founder and his ‘good friend’, Steve Jobs. He told that although their friendship was bred out of an intense reliance on each other; but it eventually became more ‘mellow’.
He said: ‘For some periods we were complete allies working together. Sometimes he would be tough on you, sometimes he would be very encouraging. And he got really great work out of people.’
‘In the early years, the intensity had always been about the project, and when Steve got sick, it was far more mellow in terms of talking about our lives and our kids’, he further added.
The billionaire also revealed how he was being ‘disruptive’ as a teenager; and forced his parents to send him to a psychologist!
He further said that his parents are the ones who have taught him the value of ‘giving back’ to society. He said, ‘They set a very good example of being engaged in giving back’.
Gates Desert Island selection included Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure, Willie Nelson’s Blue Skies, and Ed Sheeran’s Sing, among others.
He then chosed to take Steven Pinker’s ‘The Better Angels Of Our Nature’ as his book and as his luxury items, he selected copies of the world’s great lectures on DVD.
