  • People heavily invested in the political churning of India would not have missed the way the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi contests the incumbent government policies with such venomous ferocity. Agreed, the scion of the Grand Old Party has developed an apparent anathema towards the Bharatiya Janata Party over the last decade or so. This is manifested whenever the nation witnesses an election – whether state assembly or the general election – compelling the leader to launch a vituperative attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Government at the Centre. So much so that some of the attacks have been personal making the stakeholders think about why there is so much animosity towards the incumbent PM.

  • It’s worth remembering how the BJP-led NDA has successfully defeated the Congress in the last three Parliamentary elections. Notably, the Congress has not succeeded in crossing the three-digit mark in the three previous polls but has gradually increased the tally. Undoubtedly, Rahul Gandhi has evolved as a politician in the last decade by undertaking yatras spanning the length and breadth of the nation. The acceptance of the leader among the masses has seen steady growth despite gaffes ruling the roost on more than one occasion. You must give it to the leader for believing in the honest efforts even though subjected to sustained ridicule from the ruling dispensation terming those yatras as mere optics. Rahul has proved the critics wrong for sure.
  • The opposition parties coming under the umbrella of the INDI alliance must have accepted the leadership of Rahul leading from the front with his sustained adherence to some of those issues that could have played a definite role in reducing the heft of the BJP among the electorate. However, the countrymen would be left feeling aghast knowing how the enigmatic leader dons the role of a critic while visiting foreign shores. Time and again we have noticed the no-holds-barred diatribe emanating from the leader against the BJP-led Union Government while visiting overseas destinations. Donning the hat of a critic is one thing but passing unsubstantiated comments on policy matters simply does not sit well with most of the Indian citizens.

  • Understandably, you may be dead against the individual opposition leader(s) and the ideology/philosophy of a particular party. Nonetheless, using overseas platforms to dissect the nation’s policy matters not only depicts the leader in a poor light but also raises questions about the necessity itself when all leaders are expected to further the cause of the nation in unison, setting aside politics. Whatever the differences with the ruling party leaders, it does not behove the stature of the leader of the opposition to make grandiose denunciations from any foreign platform. As you read this, the latest attacks from the leader are already underway since his visit to the USA. No wonder, the BJP is quickly off the block denouncing the scion in no uncertain terms.
