- Despite the global community waking up to the stark realities of environmental degradation courtesy of the unbridled abuse of natural resources bestowed upon us by Mother Nature, humanity chugs along unalarmed. The way humankind has unceremoniously used fossil fuel explorations to further the cause of development around the world is a big worry. It’s a known fact that fossil fuel burning is one of the major causes of environmental degradation leading to a rise in the temperatures – the term being used is global warming, for the uninitiated – causing immense damage to the ecology. The cascading effect of global warming on humanity in the form of extremely unpredictable weather vagaries has had a telling effect over the last few years.

- While environmentalists, weather experts, concerned leaderships, and ordinary citizens around the world exhort humanity to show sensitivity and greater understanding towards increasingly catastrophic consequences, the intended action on the ground to address this ticking time bomb has failed to evoke the desired attention. Under the aegis of the United Nations, several measures have been initiated to address this glaring anomaly singeing humanity with the active support of countries directly and/or indirectly impacted by the degradation. Unfortunately, whatever measures have been implemented so far appear inadequate as compared to the mounting challenges facing the world from so many fronts. What’s the way out then?

- It goes without saying that the onus is among the most developed nations to lead from the front to reduce the carbon footprints and greenhouse gases creating an unlivable environment for the present and future generations. The volatility surrounding weather vagaries induced erratic occurrences viz., unseasonal rains, cloud bursts, famine, droughts, heat waves, and other such incidents are increasingly becoming the norm rather than the exception. Glacial melting is a recurrent theme of late, leading to a concatenation of events that can be aptly described as catastrophic. Worryingly, the seasonal occurrences have become increasingly unpredictable, characterized by shorter winter months, early arrival of summer, and a short monsoon span.

- The direct effect of such erratic weather vagaries will be first felt by the Agri-based industries, especially in a country like India where monsoon rains majorly drive the irrigation activities for farmers. Several cities around the globe are encountering water scarcity, which is a reality that cannot be brushed under the carpet anymore. Global leadership equally backed by obliging citizens is required to exhibit more responsibilities towards environmental concerns on a war footing. Dilly-dallying on the matter will only worsen the situation, further exacerbating the already disconcertingly challenging times.
