  • The second Covid wave is on the wane is appearing obvious by the day as the confirmed infection cases are coming down drastically across the nation. It was extremely scary when the caseload crossed four lakhs and the death rate above four thousand per day during April-May. Since then, the cases being reported to have steadily come down leading to many of the state governments unlocking the economic activities. However, there is a widespread belief – though unverified and unsubstantiated – prevalent across the nation that the actual number of fatalities could be at least three times more than stated. Whatever the situation prevalent on the ground, the fact of the matter is the infection rates have decreased rekindling hopes about moving on with our daily lives.

  • Of course, the medical and scientific experts are unanimous in their predictions about the possible third Covid wave striking the nation in October-November, and it is here that we as responsible citizens should be extremely wary about protecting not only ourselves but also our kith and kin, as well. As we are fully aware, there is nothing but vaccination alone that can prevent citizens from getting severely infected and as such, the focus, thrust, and energies should be towards ensuring an adequate number of doses are made available to all eligible categories of people. The Union Government has initiated several measures in the past few weeks on this front to ensure a steady supply of vaccines for inoculation.
  • Not much can be expected in the next couple of months vis-à-vis the scaling up of vaccination drives and sessions keeping in mind the humongous population dotting the country’s landscape. Therefore, the very least we all should do under the circumstances is to supplement the authorities by diligently observing prescribed safety and health protocols. Scrupulously observing Covid’s appropriate behavior like wearing personal masks, maintaining social distancing, frequent handwashing should be the norm for the foreseeable future. People may have reached a tipping point and would be feeling fatigued perpetually hearing about the same for over a year now. Pragmatically speaking, the virus amongst us is neither fatigued nor bored but goes about infecting whoever is found vulnerable. Hence, following the dictum to the last word is wise.

  • Further, it is incumbent on our part to not let the guard down now, especially those who are yet to receive at least one dose of the vaccination. We all have witnessed in one or the other form how excruciatingly painful it is to lose someone dear to the virus menace for being careless and complacent. Unless the last man standing gets inoculated, expect more virulent variants and strains beseeching us. The more responsibility we show, the safer we shall remain. On its part, the authorities are also expected to vigorously undertake 3Ts viz, test, trace, and treat even as hitherto inactive economic activities get underway following unlock guidelines. Any let-up in these time-tested measures would invite even further trouble and agony for all concerned. Let us make earnest efforts at fighting this out.
