- One of the most eagerly anticipated events in the life of any central government employee/public sector employee is the setting up of the Pay Commission once in ten years which determines the upper salary revision/component of the employees/pensioners for the next decade. Of course, people are familiar with how government employees receive their salaries based on the wholesale price index (WPI) determining what amount of dearness allowance to be awarded every six months. Yes, the DA is raised twice a year as per the recommendations of the Pay Commission in commensurate with the rising cost-of-living standards. DA is an increase made to the basic pay of government officials and public sector workers’ employees.

- For the uninitiated, Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of an Indian citizen’s basic salary to mitigate the impact of inflation on people. Thus, every central government employee, including military personnel, looks forward to setting up the Pay Commission once in ten years which gives its recommendations regarding changes in the salary structure of its employees. As reported recently, Union Minister Aswini Vaishnaw announced that the 8th Pay Commission formation has been approved and will submit its recommendations in January 2026 for consideration. People familiar with the job opportunities and employment scenarios in the country would notice how government jobs are still considered the safest bet vis-à-vis job security.

- Despite private sector entities transforming amazingly in the last couple of decades with the advent of cutting-edge technologies ruling the roost, the clamour for cushy government employment continues. No wonder, the clarion calls for more quotas and reservations for a particular caste keep cropping up perpetually. Moreover, ever-eager political classes are waiting for an opportunity to pitch in tents to consolidate the assiduously built vote banks by taking up the cudgel for quotas and reservations. This is a very familiar situation panning out in India that needs no further elaboration. The safety/security aspect associated with a government job cannot be replicated by any other sector, prompting everyone to try their luck to lay their hands on one.

- Interestingly, the announcement of the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission comes within a few weeks of the elections to the Delhi assembly. The Union Government knows it is crucial to keep the millions of employees/pensioners – who also happen to be a sizeable chunk of vote banks – happy with an eye to improving domestic consumption to support the economic measures. More money in the hands is likely to transform into more consumption of products, helping the nation’s GDP to further shore up. What about the additional burden on the exchequer with the salaries expected to go up substantially? The authorities and the think tank will cite anticipated consumption to shore up the revenue generation. The employees/pensioners are not complaining.
