- The much-anticipated and eagerly awaited eighteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has concluded after dishing out nail-biting, thumb-twiddling, adrenaline-pumping, heartbeat racing, and sometimes unbelievably miraculous stuff during the duration of the event. Not for nothing, the IPL is considered one of the most popular spectacles in the entire sporting world for its sheer reach, canvas, size, popularity, and following. Little wonder, cricket’s popularity in India is perpetually headed northwards, attracting millions along the way. It’s also no secret why some of the marquee cricketers would not wish to stay away from the league, which offers tremendous recognition as well as handsome monetary returns as fees. - People closely following the fortunes of Indian cricket and IPL would have noticed how the franchisees have evolved over the years in terms of choosing players to form the core nucleus of the team. Two of the most successful franchisees, viz. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have their teams built around a few proven performers producing spectacular results time and again. However, the nature of the IPL is such that every team has become smarter and wiser in choosing players who they feel will fit the bill perfectly. Remember, the ultimate aim is to lift the much-coveted cup by showcasing not only tactical brilliance but also nuanced acumen by staying attuned to the requirements. Let’s assess how the IPL panned out in this edition.

- While RCB emerged winners on the back of solid performances right throughout, a few teams that promised great results in the beginning and in the middle of the event simply petered out, failing to deliver when it mattered most. The biggest disappointment must be the way five-time champions Chennai Super Kings failed to live up to expectations and repeatedly were beaten at their once impregnable fortress of yore. Injuries to a couple of key players, including chosen captain Rituraj Gaikwad, also contributed to their dismal performances. The most disappointing aspect of the failed campaign must be the way MS Dhoni performed. He looks like a shadow of his previous self. Expect overhauling in the CSK ranks before the next edition.

- Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, were outstanding, reaching the finals after performing splendidly right through. They will have to wait, though. Mumbai Indians pulled through after a disastrous start by reaching the playoffs. Gujarat Titans were outstanding right through, but could not sustain the momentum during the business end. Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants faltered to deceive, failing to pull their weight during crunch situations. Both these teams had their moments but could not capitalise. SunRisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals were found to be not at their best, bowing out without making it to the playoffs. RCB were the deserving winners, donning the hat of the champions for the first time. Yes, the IPL rocked, yet again.
