- Psephologists in the country would be relieved and delighted at the same time since the handful of known personalities will be not without work as one or the other elections are conducted throughout the year. The Indian citizens are quite used to these elections soaking in the dance of democracy that plays out perpetually. Did someone mention it’s time to usher in One Nation, One Election? Ideally speaking, ONOE should be embraced by the political parties irrespective of party affiliations keeping in mind the humongous logistical challenges as well as the impediments to ensure the governance doesn’t get overtly affected because of the model code of conduct. Yes, the Election Commission of India rightly deserves a huge round of applause for flawless execution.

- Unsurprisingly, the ECI is renowned around the world for conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections after elections. Indeed, the conduct of a Parliamentary election is such a humongous exercise involving monumental logistical arrangements that the ECI time and again delivers with such precision. As you are aware, the Delhi assembly elections will be the next big stage for the main political parties viz. Aam Aadmi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Grand Old Party. All three parties have left no stone unturned to garner the support of the electorate by promising a variety of freebies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has acceded to the inevitability of promising freebies despite his stated reservations with a slew of announcements coming forth from the BJP.

- Understandably, AAP has lost some of its sheen over the years when its main plank of corruption-free governance and development agenda sounded hollow when no less than the party supremo was behind bars on corruption charges. Not only was party convener and ex-CM Arvind Kejriwal behind bars for a substantial period but several key ministers were incarcerated too on similar corruption charges. It’s another matter altogether that Kejriwal was released on bail during the previous Parliamentary election for campaigning. Will Kejriwal’s often accusatory barbs against the BJP for filing false cases, arresting, and subsequent incarceration cut any ice with the discerning citizens of Delhi? The time alone will reveal what’s in store for Delhi.

The BJP is hoping that the corruption charges against the AAP leaders, anti-incumbency, and some of the measures initiated by the Union Government like income tax relief to the middle class and setting up of the 8th Pay Commission would sway the voters to choose the saffron brigade with a big margin. The Congress in Delhi has become a fringe player with the party losing whatever traction it had previously owing to failure to strike a chord with the electorate. The INDI alliance is under strain with the two partners going full throttle at each other unabashedly. Will the Delhi electorate come out in great numbers to choose their representatives wisely? Will the freebies on offer help the political parties gain acceptance? Let’s wait for the eventual outcome.
