  • The Indian citizens are quite aware of how the political narrative in the country pans out vis-à-vis providing clean administration, effective governance, indulgent officials, and most importantly, honouring the commitments made as part of the electoral narrative in the form of manifestos. Mind you, we do not expect every word uttered by the political leadership to be taken at face value since the difference between what is mentioned and actioned on the ground remains substantial. The assurances to address the bane of corruption sound so hollow emanating from our leadership that it is little wonder people have indeed become cynical by the day hearing out the same narrative being bandied about. Mere talks do not fructify into tangible action, you see.

  • Cynicism is so deep-rooted in the present times that whenever any scam gets reported – there are dime a dozen cases irrespective of which party is at the helm of affairs though – it fails to evoke concern save for mundane utterances from the leaders. Of course, the media will go ga-go over the unearthing of the alleged scams for a while but will die down naturally over a period. We have seen all this. The fact of the matter is that none of the political parties are not only unserious about addressing the bane of corruption but also make little effort to root out the people identified with the corrupt practices. Recollect how the Congress government in Karnataka came to power highlighting the corrupt practices of the previous Bharatiya Janata Party government.
  • To be fair to the Congress’s aggressive campaign against the corrupt practices of the BJP government, the erstwhile regime did find itself embroiled in a slew of allegations resulting in the people’s perceptions undergoing massive change. Further, the Congress’s five guarantees also had a defining role to play in the people’s blessings catapulting the Grand Old Party to the saddle of governance yet again. It’s been more than a year since the Congress assumed power in Karnataka, and the unsurprising allegations of scams involving no less than the Chief Minister himself have been roiling the state in the last few months yet again. The nation is aware of the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam allegedly involving the family of CM.

  • Before the MUDA scam allegations broke, the Valmiki Development Corporation scam took center stage with the opposition BJP going full throttle against the ruling party. However, the BJP appears to be losing the steam out of its campaign simply because several leaders of their own are deeply involved in one or the other scam with FIRs lodged as well. This has emboldened the cornered CM to refuse to sign despite the HC upholding the prosecution granted by the Governor against him and also aggressively countering the opposition to look into the mirror for their own deeds. The common people like us are not surprised at all to see how the political class blatantly and nonchalantly goes about carrying themselves without worrying or feeling embarrassed.
