Indian Constitution
  • For the quintessential politicians, it’s all about scoring a brownie point or going one-up on the rival leader whenever an opportunity presents itself. The political class, irrespective of party affiliations, is always on the lookout for furthering the assiduously built vote banks. As Indians, we are aware of how political leaders representing different ideologies/philosophies are tuned to build on their vote banks by promising freebies, incentives, and socio-welfare schemes from the angle of caste, class, creed, language, and religion. Even though the Indian Constitution confers equal rights on citizens, the political class is quite adept at exploiting the sensitive class equation for parochial considerations. We have seen, heard, read, and written enough about political machinations.

  • The country is experiencing unprecedented weather vagaries courtesy of environmental degradation witnessed around the globe. The unseasonal rains, snowfall, drought, famine, storms, and weather patterns have caused immense hardships to the global community over the last few decades on the back of environmental degradation. Unfortunately, India is not immune to these occurrences. Take for instance what happened in Karnataka this year. The heat during the summer months was excruciating even in a relatively moderate-weather city like Bengaluru, always known for its salubrious weather. The heat during the summer months in the state capital was unheard of, leading to heatwave-like weather conditions for a couple of months.
  • Thankfully, the monsoon arrived cooling the extremely sultry weather into a more comfortable and pleasant one. Now, Bengaluru’s citizens are aware of how the road conditions in the city go from bad to worse whenever the monsoon arrives. Yes, the usual assurances and knee-jerk reactions from the civic authorities to fill up the potholes invariably ensue. The moot point to ponder over here is why in the first place the roads must turn into craters if the quality of work undertaken to lay the stretches is of the desired quality. Sadly, we know the poor execution of work is directly related to the bane of corruption that bogs society at every level of governance since the nexus between the contractor-bureaucrat-political masters is at play perpetually.

  • The honest tax-paying citizens must be wondering why on earth such a basic amenity like proper commutable roads cannot be provided by the civic agencies in a globally renowned metro like Bengaluru. No wonder, most of us living in the city have turned cynical beyond getting frustrated simply because no amount of highlighting the lacuna in the civic agencies functioning will ensure commutable roads. Whichever party assumes the power to govern the state, the conditions of basic amenities always remain pathetic despite every government promising prompt action on the ground. None of the political parties can claim to provide a clean administration since one or the other corruption scams constantly hit the headlines. We have accepted fate.
